Are All Breast Implants the Same?

Different implants can offer a different look and feel. For example, MemoryGel breast implants are designed to feel more like natural breast tissue. Can you share your expertise on how a patient can learn the differences between breast implants?

Breast implant comparison

Although all breast implants are made of a silicone elastomer shell, they differ in many other ways.

Breast implants differ in their
- type of fill (Salt Water vs. Silicone gel)
- Shape ( round vs. tear drop / anatomical)
- dimensions ( diameter / height, projection / volume)
- smooth shell vs. textured shell
- Extent of Height / projection (LP, moderate profile, Moderate Plus Profile and High Profile)

Each woman presenting for either a Breast Augmentation, revision of a breast augmentation or a breast reconstruction may present different needs. The large variety of implants is a response by our leading breast implant manufacturer to put at our disposal as surgeons as many potential options as possible for each woman's needs.

Saline filled implants are easier to put in, allow differential filling to correct small breast asymmetries, allow better mammographic visualization and are cheaper. Silicone gel implants, when compared with same volume and shape saline implants are lighter, ripple less and feel more natural.

There is NO one perfect implant; By discussing your preferences with your Plastic surgeon, he/she can direct you to the implant that has the majority of features you may be seeking from an implant.

Breast implants choices

I recommend implants manufactured by either Allergan or Mentor.  The have the highest quality products and the best support systems.  There are significant differences between gel and saline implants and these differences need to be addressed by your surgeon.

Learning the difference between breast implants

The best way to learn the differences between breast implants is to visit plastic surgeons and ask for an explanation and a chance to see and feel the different implants.  You would need to visit multiple surgeons becasue most only stock one manufacturer's product.
