Women born with overly large breasts often deal with pain, improper posture, rashes, breathing problems, skeletal deformities, and low self-esteem. Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, has been extremely successful in helping countless women alleviate these symptoms and feel more comfortable and confident in their bodies. Heavy breasts cause women to suffer not just physically but also socially. It is difficult to wear certain clothing, bathing-suits and bras. It also may cause difficulty keeping up an exercise routine. Large breasts may also draw unwanted attention that may make a women feel uncomfortable. Therefore, with breast reduction, not just medical, but social and cosmetic issues can be remedied. Performed under general anesthesia, this two to four hour procedure involves the removal of fat and glandular tissue. The skin is tightened to create smaller, lighter and firmer breasts which are more in proportion with the rest of the body. There are a couple of different surgical techniques which may be used in breast reduction such as the Inverted T-Incision, the Vertical Incision, the Free Nipple Graft and Liposuction. The technique employed depends on the amount of reduction needed and on the patient’s and Plastic Surgeon’s preference. More recently the Short-Scar Breast Reduction has gained in popularity for the appropriate breast. This surgery gives a perkier breast with significant medial fullness but without the longer incision that used to be needed for breast reduction. The nipple is moved to an appropriate position, and the breast tissue is sculpted to give an ideal shape to the breast, all with a much shorter scar.  A consultation is needed prior to breast reduction surgery, during which you and your Plastic Surgeon will discuss your goals and concerns and develop a plan to create your desired results. During the consultation the surgery, as well as the recovery, will be discussed in detail.
