A diastema is a space between 2 teeth and is mostly found between the front teeth, upper and or lower. The most common is the upper central diastema; think of Madonna, who had a small space.

A space can occur due to the following reasons:

1 teeth stick out

2 teeth are to small in width in relation to the dental arch

3 teeth are shaped slightly conically, especially the peg lateral incisor

4 lost or missing side tooth, causes the front teeth to separate

5 soft tissue tag called a frenum that sits between the from incisor roots

6 in younger children the diastema can appear before the canines erupt and push the teeth together

In the case of Madonna, the gap was quite small and not many people noticed whilst she was dancing to "Holiday" on Top of the Pops in the 1980s?

In the case of Eva Mendez or Jamie Foxx, the gaps are multiple and their teeth also protruded.

In the latter 2 cases the actors had a quick fix and had veneers.

At Forma Dental we have been providing Invisalign clear aligners for over 14 years.

Invisalign aligners are removable, virtually invisible and treat most orthodontic cases.

In 2016 I consulted with a young lady who had a midline diastema, and protruding teeth. She was not keen on fixed braces.

We agreed that Invisalign could be provided and started treatment. We took impressions and photos and sent them off for 3D scanning and treatment planning.

I already knew what the results would look like as I had carried out over 1000 cases by then.

The treatment plan consisted of about 15 months of aligners.

Although her attendance was nearly once every 3 months, the aligners are changed every 2 weeks, which allows the treatment to progress.
