Is MiraDry covered by insurance?

MiraDry is not covered by most insurance plans because it’s considered an elective treatment, rather than being medically necessary. This is true even for patients who have been diagnosed with axillary hyperhidrosis.

If you have an HSA or FSA, you may be able to pay for this hyperhidrosis treatment through your account.

Most providers also offer monthly payment plans or financing options, to help make it more affordable.

Is MiraDry worth the money?

MiraDry has a 83% Worth It Rating from reviewers on RealSelf. So while not everyone has a good experience, a majority are satisfied with their investment.

Those who say they're happy with their results often note a dramatic reduction in excessive sweating, stains, and body odor. Research shows that results should last for at least two years, but many providers on RealSelf say they can be permanent.

People who undergo this treatment may even be able to forgo deodorant and other antiperspirants, saving a bit of money in the future. The lack of sweat stains may help ease laundry bills, and because MiraDry can also impede underarm hair growth, there's less of a need for shaving supplies, too.

Some patients who say MiraDry was Not Worth It found that their treatment results weren't as impressive as they'd hoped or didn't last very long (sometimes just a few months).

Others reported side effects like soreness, swelling, blistering from severe burns, hyperpigmentation, and scarring. Some even experienced infections that required antibiotics, surgical repair of open wounds, or lingering nerve pain in their armpits that restricted their movement for months.

Ultimately, only you and an experienced provider can determine if this treatment is right for you and your budget. Be sure to do your research and request a consultation with a well-reviewed doctor before deciding on any treatment option. They may recommend one of these alternatives:

  • Botox injections have been shown to stop wetness for three to six months.
  • Qbrexza, a prescription medicated wipe that blocks receptors responsible for underarm sweat gland activation, is also another potential option to explore.

If you’ve been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis, these alternatives to MiraDry (and others, such as glycopyrrolate cream) may be covered by your health insurance.

Why does the cost of MiraDry vary?

These are the biggest factors that will influence your MiraDry price.

1) The number of treatment sessions you need.

Clinical research shows that about 80% of patients need only one MiraDry treatment to reduce wetness by 82%, but people with more severe cases of axillary hyperhidrosis may need a second treatment about three months later, to fully destroy armpit sweat and odor glands.

About 3% of patients with severe axillary hyperhidrosis choose to have a third treatment.

As you'd expect, each additional treatment session will add to your total bill. If you anticipate needing more than one session, ask your provider if they offer a discount if you purchase a package of two treatments up front.

2) The expertise and credentials of your provider.

MiraDry treatments require training, experience, and skill to ensure that you're safely numbed and the right amount of heat is applied. In inexperienced hands, it's possible to develop pigmentation issues in the treatment area, long-lasting nerve damage, and even serious burns, which can lead to infections and scars.

Even if you aren't directly treated by a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, it's important to have your MiraDry procedure in a physician-supervised office, where the staff has been trained in safe anesthesia injection techniques and use of the device. They should also be better able to assess the amount of local anesthesia you can safely tolerate.

In some cases, a physician may administer the anesthesia before turning the treatment over to a trained technician on their staff.

RealSelf Tip: Many legitimate providers offer seasonal specials (especially in the spring), but it’s wise to be wary of deals that seem too good to be true.

"Beware of 'rock bottom' prices,’ as the company sets a standard price for treatments and anyone undercutting those prices may not be using a legitimate machine or protocol,” notes Dr. Amy Paul, a board-certified dermatologic surgeon in Grand Junction, Colorado.

3) Their practice location.

Where you're treated can also impact how much MiraDry costs. If your provider practices in an area with a higher cost of living, they may charge more to help cover their overhead.

Locations with a high demand for MiraDry and few providers may have higher prices, too.

The most cost-effective scenario is being treated in an area where multiple providers are competing for patients, possibly even by offering seasonal discounts.
