5 Tips to Find the Right Provider for You

You want to explore cosmetic surgery treatments and providers, but an online search can feel a little overwhelming. How do you go from logging in to RealSelf to finding the right doctor for you?

We have some tried-and-true advice for finding the perfect provider. Just follow these five easy steps from RealSelf members and doctors:

1. Search smarter.

The best way to start your research is to tap into our provider database. Just click on “Find a Doctor” at the top of any RealSelf page. Our personalized search shows you nearby providers offering treatments you’re interested in.

Of course, the best doctor for you might not be in your zip code. That’s why you can also search top providers and read real reviews of any provider on RealSelf.

“I was interested in medical tourism to get a vacation with my mommy makeover and found a great fit with ‘find a doctor’ by selecting the country or state I was interested in visiting to find the highest-rated [doctor] with great reviews.” - RealSelf member

2. Know what to look for.

RealSelf has two designations on doctor profiles: “Core” and “Top.” What do they mean?

“Core” means that this provider has achieved a high level of medical training and board certification. In addition, they actively perform procedures and practice in their declared area of specialty.

A “Top” badge means that this provider is active on RealSelf. They answer real questions in our Doctor Q&As, and they receive positive reviews from the RealSelf community. Asking questions is a great way to connect with providers.

Also ask any provider about their specific board certifications—they should be certified in plastic surgery or in the specialty you seek—and about their hospital privileges. For invasive procedures, only book with a provider who has operating privileges in an accredited hospital.

Pro tip: Save the doctors you like in a Notebook to keep track.

“I was able to ask questions to real, board-certified doctors. One who answered my questions was actually the doctor I chose...If she cared so much to help me before becoming my doctor, I knew she would take care of me once I became her patient.” - RealSelf member

3.  Read reviews.

Our RealSelf Worth It Ratings measure our community’s overall satisfaction with a specific treatment and are a great place to start.

For a deeper dive, you should always read several reviews, especially for any doctor you are interested in. Our community offers real advice, so feel free to post questions for other people to answer.

“I found someone who recently had a Mommy Makeover by the same surgeon and had written about her experience on RealSelf, so I reached out to her privately. She was beyond thrilled to give me her candid recommendation and even offered me her cell phone number in case I had any more questions! It was amazing!” - RealSelf member

4. Schedule your consultations.

RealSelf makes it easy to request consultations. Visit doctors’ profile pages and be sure to check their special offers. Our providers often waive consult fees or have great promotions exclusively for RealSelf members.

We suggest that you write down any questions before a consultation. Our 20 Essential Questions to Ask is a great place to start.

During a consultation, note how well your provider and their staff answer your questions and take a general look around the office. Ask to see before and after pictures. Get an accurate quote that lists everything:

  • Treatment cost
  • Anesthesia
  • Support staff fees
  • Any other projected costs

Trust your gut. If something seems “off,” it’s best to move on.

“Always research more than one doctor because you just may need a plan B.” - RealSelf member

5. Pick your provider.

This is a big decision. Take your time. Make sure your provider is available to answer follow-up questions and that this person is the best fit for you. And while cost and travel are certainly a factor, don’t rely on these to be your only deciding points. This is no time to bargain hunt.

Have you picked your provider? It’s time to take care of other logistics:

  • Book your surgery and look at financing if you’re not paying for it in full.
  • Request time off work if necessary.
  • Start prepping essentials to make your recovery easier.
  • Line up childcare or additional help around the house.

“I was in search of a legitimate, board-certified doctor to perform a BBL. RealSelf helped me find an out-of-town doctor near where I would be staying. The best part was reading so many different reviews and seeing pictures from real patients. RealSelf helped me confidently make a decision and I am so pleased with my results.” - RealSelf member
