I wanted to come on here and share my story. I got a very bad case of melasma after being put on anti seizure medicine last summer for a twitching nerve above my eye. Apparently certain anti seziure meds can make you very sensative to sunlight and it brought out melasma in me very badly on my forehead and two patches underneath both eyes on my face. I only took the medicine for 2 weeks but one day after taking it for about 10 days I came home from being out at the pool and looked in the mirror and wanted to die. I couldnt imagine how I was going to go on in life with this seemingly permanent discoloration all over my normally clear face. I was 28 and devestated. I paid out of pocket to go to 4 different derms who just recomended peels that would cost over 500 dollars. Thankfully I did not do them. I got a presecription for tri luma but after reading some not so great things about it online, never used it. I tried taking tons of vitamin c and zinc etc and put every vitamin c serum and skin lightener on my face that I could find. None of it seemed to make a huge difference. Ive always been a healthy eater but about 6 months into the melasma I stopped eating gluten, dairy, added sugars and soy and really stuck to eating fruits, vegetables, turkey/chicken/fish, oatmeal, natural granola bars, etc. Slowly over time the melasma faded and now its been 12 months and all that is left is the faintest trace. I think that in my case it was simply time and strict diet that reversed mine. I never went outside once i had melasma because i was so scared of making it worse and im a marathon runner so it was torture to be on a treadmill inside every day. However, ive been back to running outside the past few months and have even gone to the beach and the sunlight has not made the melasma return. I moisturizer with spf 30 in it every day under my makeup without fail, even in the winter. Honestly I think this is key too. I hope my story can possibly help someone!
