Warning: Costume Makeup Can Cause Acne Breakouts and Other Skin Reactions. Learn How to Keep Your Skin Safe This Halloween!
- Last updated: 3 months ago
It's that time of year again when people transform themselves from everyday people into scary zombies and ghouls. But before you stop and shop for your Halloween makeup, here's what you need to know to keep your skin safe:
Check the Ingredients: Cheap Halloween makeup can be extremely toxic due to the lower quality of ingredients used—and for a longer shelf life, they usually contain large amounts of toxic preservatives such as parabens. According to RealSelf Doctor Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, "costume make-up can cause acne breakouts, allergic reactions - and even long-term deadly illnesses." She warns that another dangerous chemical found in Halloween makeup is phthalates, she reveals that it has been detected in people's blood who regularly wear stage makeup, and is linked to breast cancer. That's pretty scary—so pay close attention to what's in your makeup over the price—or make your own. In the following video Youtuber Gdlookincookinwkaye explains how to make face paint with just 3 simple ingredients:

Check the expiry date: Makeup expiry dates matter, so don't ignore that date stamp on the bottle—it's there for a reason. After applying her fake iron burn mark, Youtuber DIY Queen used an expired product which caused a bad reaction. She later realized that the product she purchased from a Halloween store was almost 4 years old!
Bottom line, RealSelf doctor Joel Schlessinger says, "If costume makeup is a must, look for products that are oil-free, alcohol-free and non-comedogenic with a water base. (These are the ones that are sold in cake pans and look like water color palettes.) Oil-based and ointment-based makeup is much more likely to clog pores."
