With so many over the counter acne products on the market these days, it's important to use caution before applying any product to your skin. Although rare, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that "Certain acne treatments can, in rare instances, cause severe allergic reactions that are potentially life-threatening." It has not been confirmed by the FDA if the reactions were caused by the products’ active or inactive ingredients, or a combination of both. Some of the reactions reported range from severe allergy symptoms such as closing of the throat and shortness of breath, to fainting or collapse. Some minor reactions noted are hives, itching, and swelling of the face, lips, and eyes.
Some of the commonly known products mentioned are as follows:
- Clean & Clear
To be on the safe side be sure to do a small test spot on the affected area of your skin to ensure you don't have a reaction.
