Kybella vs. CoolMini: Which would you choose?
- Last updated: 2 months ago
Kybella has been taking the chin fat reduction market by storm since becoming FDA approved earlier this year, claiming less downtime and expense than chin liposuction. Many reviews on RealSelf are currently chronicling what to expect from Kybella; most notably that the downtime is more than anticipated thanks to extreme swelling immediately post-injection, and residual hardness and swelling in the weeks after. But even with the reality of the "bullfrog" swelling, it is proving to be an effective option for the removal of your bothersome fat pocket without costly surgery and recovery. Other companies have certainly taken notice. Hot on Kybella's heels is CoolMini: CoolSculpting for the chin area. CoolSculpting has been around for years and is a popular non-invasive fat reduction process that uses crypolipolysis freezing technology to kill fat cells. The makers of CoolSculpting have recently had the CoolMini applicator FDA approved, and the treatment is now available.
How does CoolMini work?
Think of a fat cell as a water balloon, with the balloon material being the cell wall. CoolSculpting freezes the cell causing the cell wall to tear, while keeping the skin and surrounding tissues at a safe temperature. The broken fat cells re-thaw after the treatment and the fluids are then digested and released by the body (yup, you basically absorb and pee it all out over time). The CoolMini device literally sucks the fatty chin area into a chamber and freezes the fat. There is minimal pain, no downtime, and hopefully no bullfrog swelling like that from Kybella. One or two treatments are likely needed to achieve a desired result and the cost is anticipated to be lower (word on the street is about $1,000 per session). The biggest factor will be how many sessions a person actually needs to undergo in order to achieve the results they want. If it is truly one to two treatment sessions, this may soon become the new favorite chin treatment on RealSelf.
The RealSelf Worth It Rating for CoolSculpting is 72% (1,463 total reviews) and Kybella is 100% (42 total reviews) at the time of this posting. There is no RealSelf data of CoolMini at this time.
So the question of the day is- which one would you choose if you had to pick right now? Acid or Ice? Kybella or CoolMini? Comment below with your thoughts and questions, and we will post an update when we have more info on CoolMini.
