Extracted tooth - recovery and bone graft
- Last updated: 5 months ago
Hello - I had the bottom left molar extracted ten days ago. It was severely infected and there was significant bone loss. I will likely get an implant within the year so I asked for the bone graft. Everything is working out great so far. Have two quick questions.1. Do bone grafts help keep the teeth beside the extracted area from moving around? In other words if I didn't request the graft I think the surgeon would have just extracted the tooth and that would have been it. So I'm wondering why aren't bone grafts done as a regular procedure after extracting a tooth (if they help eliminate the other teeth from moving around). Or is an implant now necessary since the tooth was removed.2. How long does it usually take before it's ok to chew near that extracted side? The gum over the extracted site is healing and I'm wondering if I'll ever be able to eat on the left side again. Does the skin toughen up or develop some kind of "callous".Thank you.
