I first had braces when I was 14. My orthodontist was really good as she was a board certified orthodontist and fixed my teeth in less than 2 years. She told me to use my retainers for 2 years and then I could throw them away after.
Around 5 years later my teeth shifted. Some say it was due to my wisdom teeth erupting, others say it was because retainers are something you wear forever. My orthodontist moved to a different city so I no longer see her. Fast forward to 2016, I finally had my wisdom teeth removed by a dental surgeon. He told me he also does braces as he also has training in orthodontics. Stupid and naive me went and got the braces installed as the price was very reasonable. In the beginning he told me that it'll take only 1 to 1 1/2 years to correct the alignment and overbite. I know time is never a guarantee but what gave me so much frustration is this:It's been 2 1/2 years already and I've never missed an appointment (except for a few because of the total lock down beginning of this year) and I've seen little improvement. There was change during the initial 3-5 months but no further change afterwards. Also, I rarely see the main doctor as it's his assistants who usually do the adjusting. I also found out that their clinic does not have any orthodontists rather 1 dental surgeon (he's a licensed dental surgeon but only got a few months of orthodontic training - stupid me for not checking) and a few general practitioners. It made total sense. My previous orthodontist used a lot of other orthodontic tools (rubber bands, rotators, etc) while my current doctors simply did usual adjustments.
What pisses me off even more is that they removed the brackets from my lower teeth when it seemed like they the treatment was not finished and now they're trying to convince me to remove the upper braces since I'm already 27 y.o. and the bones are too dense for braces. This has hard for me to believe as a lot of my coworkers and cousins got braces past 40y.o. And so I ask what about my overbite they said I didn't have an overbite. And finally, they suggested for me to consider surgery......I just couldn't understand why they would offer braces to someone my age if there would be a problem like this. Also, I couldn't help but wonder if they were trying to extract more money from me since the main doctor's specialty is surgery then of course he would want to operate on more patients.
I've been trying to search for my previous orthodontist to no avail. I'm just really frustrated and annoyed as it seems like I've wasted so much money already. My middle incisors aren't align with the rest of my teeth, my outer incisors need to rotate more.
Is my dentist correct in saying 27 is too old to get well aligned teeth?
