to read some of the answers to your question by physicians, it makes my blood boil. &nbsp;LASEK is very similar to PRK and it is very controversial at best which procedure gives better outcomes and better patient experiences. &nbsp;In fact, you can find many, likely hundreds, of studies comparing them, and most of them will show almost no difference, although the majority will likely show better comfort and recovery with PRK. &nbsp;In fact, many doctors used to do LASEK and then finally realized that if they do a small surface defect with PRK and manage the patient properly, the PRK patient heals faster with better comfort also. &nbsp; To say that PRK is "old and not advanced" shows what can be wrong with a forum such as this. &nbsp;Doctor's give opinions that are geared towards their own bias and not based on fact or scientific data. &nbsp; Go to the doctor you liked and trusted the most. &nbsp;LASIK also works quite well for your myopia and in fact, more patients undergo LASIK with this prescription than PRK or LASEK combined. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

I went to 3 different places for consultation. First suggested LASIK... second (Bascom Palmer) said I was a candidate for either LASIK or PRK... third Rand Eye suggested LASEK, but I believe that is all they do now. When I went to the 2nd consult I didn't understand that their was a difference between PRK and LASEK. Why as a surgeon would you prefer one over the other (not taking LASIK into account). Thanks.

Your prescription is more amenable to a PRK procedure due to the corneal thickness. However there are several other tests that you need to fully answer the question of whether or not you are a candidate. &nbsp;The anklyosing spondylitis is not an absolute contra-indication to having the procedure, and many patients with that diagnosis have gone on to have extremely successful procedures. &nbsp;That in and of itself is not a reason not to proceed, however Ankylosing Spondylitis can be associated with other conditions which may make candidacy for surgery more questionable. &nbsp;Make sure you are also checked for other autoimmune conditions, especially Rheumatoid Arthritis..&nbsp;

I have been advised that I have a thin cornea size of 478 microns. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. My contact lens prescription is -6.00. Would you recommend any laser corrective surgery such as Lasik or PRK? Also do I need to be aware of any other eye care issues?

You may very well be a candidate, but the prescription is only one of several factors we use in determining candidacy. &nbsp; A thorough exam by a reputable Laser Vision provider should answer your candidacy question more completely. &nbsp;You will need multiple scans of the cornea which are actually three-dimensional and provides us with important structural information concerning your eye&#39;s ability to safely undergo these procedures. &nbsp;There will also be other tests such as dry eye tests, dilated exams and several others. &nbsp;If all of this is normal, then yes, you should be a candidate. &nbsp;If you are treated in good hands and with superb technology, you most likely will end up with an excellent result, no longer needing any glasses or contacts.&nbsp;

i&#39;m 31 years old with my prescription -5.5 and -4.5 for left and right eye resp. my prescription is stable for about 3 years .. can i do lasik and need nor more glasses or contact and my vision will be 20/20?

Both eyes heal differently post op Lasik and sometimes one eye will take longer to reach its full potential. &nbsp; However, there are also some healing problems and issues that need to be looked at by your eye doctor-- &nbsp;they will check to see if the prescription is correct, if the flap is well positioned and if there is any unusual occurrences such as a decentration or inflammatory swelling. &nbsp; Most of the time the eye is just a little dry and thankfully almost everything has a &#39;fix&#39; to it. &nbsp; &nbsp;

I have had a lasik surgery 15 days ago, my left eye seems to be working as expected with very sharp vision.However my right eye is suffering a bit blurry image , darkened, and hazy vision. Effect is even more noticeable at night when looking at illuminating banners or distant objects even in day light. As if I&#39;m wearing a dirty contact lens on my right eye. Allergy season is actually a very common time of the year that patients are interested in Laser Vision Correction due to their problems with itching and irritation from contact lenses. &nbsp;It is no problem whatsoever to have Laser eye surgery during this season, and you can continue on your current medications. &nbsp;A few key points to remember: &nbsp;1) the medicated eye drops we give you post operatively after surgery will take full care of your allergic symptoms, so for those first few weeks post op, even during allergy season, your eyes will feel fine even without your normal allergy meds. &nbsp; &nbsp;2) the meds you take by mouth for allergies can dry your eyes as well as other mucous membranes in your body. &nbsp; You may need to make up for the drier eyes by using extra lubricant drops or try to limit your usage of the oral allergy meds as much as you can. &nbsp;3). &nbsp;No eye rubbing! &nbsp;You really shouldn&#39;t rub the eyes after these surgeries, as you can weaken the cornea in the long run. &nbsp;Learn how to deal with allergies without rubbing your eyes! &nbsp; Good luck, it is a great procedure and you will love it!

i&#39;ve been wearing lenses for 10 years( that never hurt me) and i got allergic conjunctivitis for 7 days i&#39;m now on patanol and steroid and my doctor advised me to have lasik and told me that all the work is on the cornea and its ok to do while i&#39;m on treatment. can i do it while i&#39;m on the drops or should i wait till the allergy subsides and i stop the drops??

you may benefit from an enhancement of the procedure, which can be done in a variety of ways-- &nbsp; the two best options in this scenario are typically: &nbsp;1)you can have PRK on top of the flap or 2) a new LASER driven side cut placed into the old flap and then using that new laser side- cut to lift the old flap. &nbsp;

	It is also possible that medical treatment could improve your sight. &nbsp;sometimes these symptoms are due to dry eye, in which case appropriate treatment would lessen the symptoms. &nbsp; &nbsp;there are also medicated eye drops which can reduce the pupil size at dusk/dark, and these can also be used to help you if further surgery is not indicated. &nbsp;&nbsp;

	An evaluation by an experienced surgeon should help determine which option is best for you..&nbsp;

All-laser Lasik is known to diminish the risk of nightime issues. I had a surgery using older methods (blade flap and laser without wavefront) and have glares and starbursts. Is there a way to fix that?

I don&#39;t see why not. &nbsp;LASIK has been proven over many years now and its safety/effectiveness are unparalleled. &nbsp; A -2.25 is like a 1 foot putt for most experience LASIK surgeons and it is highly likely that you end up with at least a 20/20 outcome. &nbsp; Having said all that, it is imperative that you are a perfect candidate for the procedure. &nbsp;You need a visit at a reputable Laser Eye Center/surgeon to make sure you are suited for the procedure. &nbsp;Once you are deemed an excellent candidate, your chances for an amazing success are very, very high.&nbsp;

Don&#39;t worry about any altitude effects with LASIK. that would be extremely uncommon and likely limited to patients that had very high rx treatments and/or have resultant weakened corneas and poor vision already. &nbsp; &nbsp;Radial Keratotomy, a procedure where we used to make several incisions in the cornea to flatten it, did result in weakness and altitude related issues/blurring. &nbsp; RK was replaced by laser treatments in the early 90&#39;s. &nbsp;

I had Lasik over 12 years ago and am now planning on climbing Mt Elbrus, would it still have a bearing on the altitude after having had the op so long ago?

There is no question that you are better off with PRK. &nbsp;Both are great procedures, but ICL is a bit aggressive for your low RX. &nbsp;Many studies show that the stability of PRK over many years may even exceed that of LASIK. &nbsp;It is a fantastic procedure when done properly and the healing isn&#39;t nearly as bad as some may tell you. It really does depend on your pre and post op care, and the skill and care of your surgical team/surgeon. &nbsp;Choose that carefully and you will do great!&nbsp;

I am 28, have a prescription of -3.0 (right) and -2.0 (left).&nbsp; I have been to two separate eye clinics and one advises PRK and one ICL. The surgeon recommending ICL says they believe my corneas are too thin even for PRK and that ICL would be much safer. ICL does sound like the more pleasant option but is twice the price! Any advice?

Yes, you can do this, but many centers like to make sure you are a good candidate prior to setting you up for surgery appointments. &nbsp;Also, there are many times when we notice things on your eye exam which require some treatment prior to surgery. &nbsp;Some examples of this are dry eyes, lid crusting, corneal inflammation, contact lens warpage... &nbsp; So, it is frequently recommended to have an exam for candidacy and then discuss surgical scheduling once you know you are a great candidate. &nbsp;good luck!&nbsp;

I was just wondering if it was possible to schedule a consultation one day and then the following day have the procedure done? I am driving about two hundred miles to have this procedure and it would be a great help if I didn&#39;t have to complete the drive two weeks in a row. The facility I am going to suggested a consult this week and then surgery the following week. Thanks in advance!

My results were just as expected the first year or so  . . . I was so delighted!!  But then, I noticed that my close-in vision was going bad very fast.  Then I noticed my astigmatism coming back.  Now, five years post-op, I need glasses again to see clearly, for near and distant vision.  If you don't have any astigmatism issues, perhaps this won't be an issue for you . . . but if the astigmatisms just come back, then why bother?  I also need Restatis . . . an expensive hassle but at least I am no longer getting eye irritations and infections.  I would take my old vision back in a heart beat . . . at least I would not need daily eye drops (which are very expensive) and I could see my food when I eat!
