Latisse is a drug from the prostaglandin class of medications. It is the only FDA-approved medication to grow eyelashes. Do other glaucoma medications enhance eyelash growth? Absolutely, all of the prostaglandins do (Travatan &amp; Xalatan), however, keep in mind that the companies that make the other drops have not gone back to the FDA to seek approval for this clinical use, so we cannot prescribe these medicines for eyelash growth. Only those "lucky" patients who use these for glaucoma will see the eyelash-growing benefits. Cosmetic patients will have to stick to Latisse.

	&nbsp;

	There is no difference between Lumigan (the original formula) and Latisse. They are both bimatoprost 0.03%. I mention the original formula, because Allergan has recently released a newer version of Lumigan which is 0.01% to try to reduce eye redness (one of the most common and bothersome side effects for patients who use Lumigan for glaucoma).

	&nbsp;

	Does combigan cause eyelashes to grow? NEVER. Combigan is combination of brimonidine (an alpha-agonist) and timolol (a beta-blocker). Neither of these classes of drugs will cause eyelash growth.

	&nbsp;

	Bottom line: don't self-medicate. Get your medications from a reputable doctor and you will get the right medication for the right indication.

Will Combigan or Travatan Z Help my Eyelashes Grow As Well As Latisse Does?

	Depends on why you lost the lashes. Latisse works great for most people who have healthy hair follicles with an existing lash. There are a number of conditions i.e. lupus, skin cancer of the eyelid, and alopecia where the eyelash may not return. If you plucked the lashes by accident (and you do not have a bad habit of grasping the lashes and repeatedly plucking them), they they should return and Latisse can help them grow longer, thicker and darker. However, if those lashes just started disappearing and you're not sure why, then I would suggest you see an ophthalmologist (not optometrist) or and oculo-plastic surgeon to get to the bottom of why you lost the lashes.&nbsp;

You have developed myokymia of the eyelids. The most common causes of eyelid myokymia are fatigue, stress, insomnia, excessive caffeine intake AND dry eyes. Can Latisse cause this? Absolutely. Latisse applied to the eyelashes will seep into the tear film. There, it can cause the eyes to become red, burn, itch and feel dry. The dryness can cause myokymia or an eyelid twitch. Most ophthalmologists would recommend artificial tears 3-4x's/day. If that didn't resolve the issue a more complete eye exam would be required.

	&nbsp;

	Latisse is a topical prostaglandin, a powerful drug originally created to treat glaucoma. Ideally, it should be prescribed by ophthalmologists. Thanks to one of its main SIDE EFFECTS, eye lash growth, many dermatologists and plastic surgeons find themselves prescribing it with little experience using this class of drug on or around the eyes.

Used Latisse for about four months..two bottles. It definitely worked on the lashes. About a month later noticed the left eye started to twitch..assumed it was from the latisse, so started using the product every other night. The twitching continued, stopped using the product. Still two months later the twitching continues when talking. Could this be related to the Latisse? If so, is it reversible?

I have used Lumigan (same as Latisse) directly on the eye for the treatment of thousands of glaucoma patients. I have not seen discoloration of the white of the eye in any of them. Some have developed darkening of the lids and peri-ocular area. This is considered a reversible side effect when the medication is discontinued. It can make the white of the eye look red, sometimes very red. This is called hyperemia. Again, this will resolve in most patients over a few weeks, but discontinuation is sometimes recommended if it bothers the patient.&nbsp;

After 2 months of using Latisse, you&#39;ll be the best judge of what your lashes look like. Are they longer, thicker, and darker? I have not seen peoples eyelashes &quot;look horrible&quot; or &quot;all fall out&quot;. When used correctly, Latisse does an excellent job enhancing eyelash growth with minimal risk of side effects. I have not seen or spoken to any patients who have used Idol Lash and there are no studies comparing the two. If you do give it a try, I would love to hear how it worked for you.

I've been using Latisse for about 2 months now, and I read some reviews that after 6-7 months your eyelashes will either look horrible, or they will end up falling all out. Why is that? And, since I am using latisse for 2 months now, is it okay if I switch to IDOL LASH later on in the future?

The real question that is being posed is should one purchase their glaucoma medication at a deep discount from a &quot;foreign&quot; pharmacy? I have patients who are originally from India and Mexico and they travel to their home countries frequently. They have reported to me that they are able to obtain their medications from legitimate pharmacies at much cheaper rates when compared to the U.S. It really makes me wonder why Americans are charge so much more for the same medications (I hear that it has to do with the cost of research and development).

	With that being said, it doesn&#39;t answer that question about the &quot;foreign&quot; pharmacy YOU are using. The medication could be legitimate, but it could be counterfeit, which is a huge, worldwide problem nowadays. Do you really want to take the chance that you are gettting nothing more than saline, or even worse, something that could harm your eyes. Glaucoma is a potentially blinding condition and requires proper treatment and continued follow-up.

	Technically, Lumigan and Latisse are bimatoprost 0.03% and there is no real difference between the two (Lumigan does come in a 0.01% concentration which helps to reduce some side effects like hyperemia or red eyes). Both are designed to be used one drop every night. Lumigan is applied directly to the eye, whereas Latisse is applied to the upper lid with an applicator. Latisse samples come in 3 ml bottles and Lumigan samples come in 2.5 ml bottles, although Lumigan can be purchased in various bottle sizes.

	The bottom line is that&nbsp; you need to talk to your ophthalmologist about other medication options to treat your glaucoma if you are unable to afford what he or she has prescribed. Xalatan is now available as a generic in the United States. The generic name is latanoprost. You may also be able to get your doctor to sign you up for a patient assistance program that allows you to receive your medication directly from the pharmaceutical company at no cost.

I am 46 years old and have advanced glaucoma. My doctor has prescribed Lumigan as one of my medications. I have no insurance, and I have to pay out of pocket for all my medications. I have found a foreign pharmacy that sells bimatoprost 0.03%, labeled as Latisse, for $10/bottle (versus $60-70 in U.S. pharmacies). Would it be safe and effective to use the product labeled &quot;Latisse&quot; in place of Lumigan for glaucoma?

Currently, Latisse does not have a generic equivalent. Medications typically have two names, a &quot;brand&quot; name and a &quot;generic&quot; name. With regards to Latisse, Latisse is the &quot;brand&quot; name and bimatoprost is the &quot;generic&quot; name. Both names will appear on the box when you purchase it. Because this medication is still under patent, no other companies can manufacture bimatoprost, so you will only find it under the BRAND NAME. Once the patent expires, then other companies will be able to produce it under the generic name alone.

	Xalatan is another prostaglandin used for glaucoma and its patent recently expired. It can now be purchased exclusively as a generic under the generic name latanoprost. Unforunately, this medication is not FDA-approved for eyelash growth. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of ocular hypertension and glaucoma.

Your question is a good one and one that has not been brought up very much. When I was doing my training as a glaucoma specialist at the Harvard Medical School, the co-directors of the glaucoma department, Drs. Lou Pasquale and Cynthia Grosskreutz brought to my attention a very intersting side effect of the prostaglandin eye drops (most notable bimatoprost). They published a paper on their findings and I think you will find this paper interesting as it answers your question. Links can not be posted, but simply do a Google search for: &quot;Periorbital Changes Associated With Topical Bimatoprost + Pasquale + Grosskreutz&quot; and you will find the paper.

	I&#39;ll summarize it for you: bimatoprost can cause fat atrophy and has been noted to cause enophthalmos (sinking of the eye into the orbit due to loss of periorbital fat). I saw this happen in my clinic for the first time recently with one of my patients who was using bimatoprost for cosmetic eyelash growth--Latisse&reg;. Up until this point, I only saw this happen with patients using bimatoprost directly on the eye to treat glaucoma--Lumigan&reg;.

	The good news is that this is reversible but it does require discontinuation of bimatoprost. Because of this side effect and others we have seen (and some we have not seen like iris color changes, which is not reversible), we have begun research on creating a natural eye drop to enhance eyelash growth. This is something that is greatly needed. To date, most of the other non-FDA-approved alternatives to Latisse&reg; included a prostaglandin derivative which could potentially cause all the same side effects as the prostaglandin molecule itself, so be careful if you have already seen that this is something that you are prone to.

i have experiecned a significant deeping of the upper sulcus after using latisse for 25 months every night, will this effect reverse from discontinuing the use of latise or will it reverse if i decrease the application to every third night of using the product.

We have had some patient&#39;s use Latisse in an off-label fashion with good success. The other product that is designed for this purpose is RevitaBrow. It is not a FDA-approved medication, but an OTC cosmetic product sold in doctors&#39; offices. We&#39;ve received great feedback on this product.

I am interested in knowing which of these three products would work best for eyebrows. I know Librow isn&#39;t FDA approved and that latisse and rogaine aren&#39;t approved for eyebrow hair growth... But if I were to use one of these products which would be best Thank you

I would wait until the scarring/healing process has slowed down, usually about 6 months after the surgery. Prostaglandins can cause increased inflammation which can cause hyperpigmentation. If you have an incision line that is still healing, it may become hyperpigmented, especially if your skin is pigmented (African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics and even some darker-featured Caucasians). Then again, many people's incision lines are not very visible after blepharoplasty in which case you may choose to use the Latisse one month later with permission from your surgeon. 

I had asian double eyelid surgery 1.5 weeks ago and I wanted to know if it was safe to use Latisse after blepharoplasty and how soon I can use it if so. Thank you very much in advance.
