Dr. Hamawy was a combat trauma surgeon in the U.S. Army, served a tour of duty in Iraq, and his experience with combat casualties is what led him to pursue plastic surgery. There was an intense need not only to save lives but also to restore them to look and feel normal, which attracted him to the meticulous attention to detail required to achieve optimal wellness, not just of the body but of the mind as well. After almost a decade in the military and shaped by these unique and varied experiences, Dr. Hamawy trained with some of the foremost surgeons in the world. He first completed a residency in general surgery at Cornell’s New York Presbyterian Hospital and later pursued further specialization as a plastic surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
