Procedures I'm known for
Breast Surgery
I specialize in breast augmentations, breast reductions, and breast lifts, which I frequently perform with implants to deliver the best result. Breast reductions and breast lifts are big surgeries—each takes at least three hours—and I take care that every stitch is perfect. I’m no less detail-oriented with breast augmentations. I always try to provide the desired aesthetic result immediately after surgery by carefully placing the implants low, so the patient won’t need to wait long for the implants to drop. I also customize the surgery to the patient’s desired aesthetic by providing a variety of implant options, some with more projection than others, to help create the exact look the patient is trying to achieve. I always utilize a short (less than 1-inch) incision, concealed within the breast fold, to place the implants under the muscle via a dual-plane technique.
Rhinoplasty and Nose Shaping
I perform more rhinoplasty surgery at my practices in the greater Boston area than any other type of surgery. I love the inherent challenge of detailed surgeries, and no other surgery demands such attention to detail as rhinoplasty. I enjoy creating a natural, balanced appearance when enhancing a nose, to truly complement the rest of the face. Rhinoplasty is a game of millimeters, and the slightest adjustment to the dorsum can affect the tip or vice versa. While some noses can benefit from more significant modification than others, my goal is always to strive for a natural-looking result. It’s so important to me to not compromise patient care that I do a six-graft standard rhinoplasty, for every single primary rhinoplasty. Another must with nasal surgery is to reinforce the changes I’m making with cartilage grafts. Grafts help maintain the appearance of the nose over time by preventing collapse and keeping things straight. This helps alleviate two common causes of revision rhinoplasty.
Abdominoplasty
I’ve always been drawn to the variety of surgical procedures involved in plastic surgery. Abdominal tightening is one of the unique areas of the body that has an exhaustive set of options, with new technologies emerging and constant updates in surgical techniques. I often talk to patients about all the noninvasive and surgical techniques available to tighten the abdomen and educate patients on the treatment that best suits them. Some patients are better candidates for surgical methods like a tummy tuck to remove excess skin, tighten abdominal muscles, and—in 90% of tummy tuck cases—use focused or 360 liposuction to create the goal abdominal contour. All patients are unique, and I enjoy navigating the world of abdominal tightening treatments to individualize the treatment to a patient’s specific needs.

RealSelf Q&A with Dr. Mark Markarian
RS: What sets you apart as a plastic surgeon?
MM: I have a lot of personality and energy, which allows me to make a genuine connection with patients. I’m very blessed to do what I do and really appreciate the opportunity I have. I took a circuitous route to get into plastic surgery—I originally wanted to go into pediatrics because I love kids. That energy carries over into the connection I make with patients, one that doesn’t stop once you leave the hospital or office. It’s lifelong and very special.
RS: What inspired you to become a plastic surgeon?
MM: Plastic surgery is the only surgical field where people see the finished product. All surgery makes an immediate impact, but here you’re held to another level of accountability. Millimeters count in a nose. A centimeter counts in a breast. People notice a little swelling or fullness. The meticulous nature of plastic surgery and how much of an impact it makes on someone’s life completely intrigues me.
RS: What’s a consultation with you like?
MM: COVID-19 has revolutionized my practice for the better. I do complimentary 30-minute video consultations at least once before I see patients in the office. I give them individualized attention, go over all the details of the surgery, and answer all their questions. When I see them for a follow-up, we’ve already established a connection.
RS: How would you describe your approach to plastic surgery?
MM: It’s very individualized. Not every breast, nose, or tummy looks the same when I’m done. It’s definitely about what the patient wants and their desired aesthetic outcome. My job is to guide them to something that I feel is realistic and safe, that will actually look good. If I don’t think a procedure is right for a patient, I let them know that too—and that’s something most patients respect and appreciate.
