QUESTIONS ANSWERED

This is a very good question and I come across this dilemma several times a week. It is hard to say from the photo if your tooth is restorable, but from my experience, even if you could save this tooth, it may not last that long as the foundation is very weak and this molar tooth is under a lot of biting forces as well. The most cost effective treatment with the longest lasting result is placing a dental implant in the area of this broken tooth. Implants have a great success track and last a long time with proper care and maintenance. I hope this helped.

I would try one more time bonding it and making sure the bite is correct and not causing any interference with the bonding in all chewing positions. If not, another viable option is placing a porcelain veneer on the tooth. That would give you the best esthetic result.

Root canals is an ideal treatment for saving your tooth. Once the root canal is done, the infected tooth should start feeling better within a few days. Most likely your dentist will make a small hole through your anchor tooth to perform the root canal and once root canal is complete, the small hole will be sealed with a permanent filling material.  Just remember that sometimes it is possible for the porcelain of the anchor tooth to crack or break off, in which case a new bridge may be needed.

You would be a good candidate to align your teeth using Invisalign.  You need to wear the aligners for 22 hours per day.  I always advise my patients to be honest with themselves. If your life style does not allow you to wear the aligners the appropriate amount of time, you may want to consider traditional braces; however I find most people are very compliant with their aligners.  You will love the result.

I think that you are an excellent candidate for Invisalign express case. It will only take 5-6 months with 10 trays.

The white area on your tooth appears to be a decalcification lesion. Depending on the type of decalcification, it can sometimes be corrected by abrasion and bonding. Deeper decalcifications are sometimes very difficult to mask with bonding and for an ideal solution you could place a porcelain veneer on your tooth that will completely mask the white spot.  I would recommend whitening prior to any veneer or bonding procedure. Good luck.

Although it's pretty difficult to give an exact answer with only one photo, but it appears that you may need some extractions in order to create enough room for your teeth to align properly.  I think you'll get a better and more predictable result with traditional braces versus Invisalign. Consult with an experienced orthodontist.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign? (Photo)

You should be a good candidate for Invisalign to align your teeth again after initial orthodontic relapse. See your dentist to make sure your short roots will not become an issue.

Do I need veneer or crown? (photo)

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
The main question is what are you trying to achieve? If you are only concerned about the darken lower tooth with the root canal, then in my opinion you'll get a better esthetic result with a crown.  If you are trying to improve your smile as a whole, I recommended orthodontic treatment first and then possible veneers and crowns to improve the esthetics. If you want the lower 4 teeth looking good and straight, combination of crown on root canal tooth and veneer on the rest would also work. The final decision however rests with your dentist, as he/she can examine your bite and sees the overall picture.

A new crown could definitely affect your bite. If you feel like your bite is not the same, then definitely let your dentist know to make adjustments.  Unbalanced bites could affect your jaw joint which could possibly cause some muscular issues. I can't tell you that your back problem is caused by #8 crown, but I recommend you have your dentist adjust the crown so you bite does not feel lopsided.
