If you are on the younger side, my concern would be about some underlying medical issue that could be causing your hair loss. Auto-immune conditions, various hormone issues (like your thyroid), or vitamin deficiencies (iron and others) are some of the common things to be looking into. Some require simply a blood test to diagnose, while others might need a biopsy taken by a dermatologist or hair specialist. If you are older than 50 - 55, this may be related to menopause. And first it would be important to check your hormonal status with your primary care or OB physician to see if you might benefit from Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). When it comes to hair transplant, the answer is Yes - with proper techniques and preparation, it is possible to transplant new hairs without permanently disrupting the hairs that are already there (your native hairs). A: Hi - I'm sorry to hear your experience 5 years ago was not as great as it should have been. When grafts to not take, it is often a sign of poor surgical technique. For healthy patients, there should be almost 100% growth of the grafts if the proper care is taken during surgery. In your case, it would be best seen by exam in the clinic whether there was also a problem in the donor area where the grafts were taken. If the extraction of the FUE was done properly, the remaining hairs in the donor area should still be strong and healthy. These can still be harvested and if the skin in the front of the scalp (the recipient area) healed well after surgery, at this point it should be more than healthy enough for another surgery with proper techniques and graft survival should not be a problem. Your exam should include the surgeon's expert opinion if there are signs of any skin conditions however that could have lead to the problem in the first surgery. Patients who have auto-immune problems, history of itchy or infected scalp, tightness of the scalp skin, or other traumas/scars could have something else going on that would lead to problems with the grafts being able to take and grow properly. A: Hey there, happy to help you think this through. The main thing about planning hair surgery is looking at the head from all different angles. Literally. That's how you can ensure things end up looking natural in the end. Without seeing a view with your eyebrows in it from the front, and a side view with your ears as well, it's difficult to diagnose the exact stage of hair loss you have. My guess is you are Stage 2 or 3. The number of grafts depends on the goal of the surgery, which relates to your age at the time of surgery, your facial structure, body height, family history of hair loss. and what other things you are currently doing or would be willing to do to prevent more hair loss in the future. Obviously that is a bigger conversation but those points should be discussed thoroughly by any trained hair surgeon you visit. My estimate from just this one view would be in the range of 1000-1200 grafts if it is only the temples that have loss (meaning the top and crown of the head and temporal points on the sides of the forehead truly do not have any thinning that needs to be addressed). A: Your loss is Stage 2 - best seen in the side view, where if you draw a line down from where the hair in your temples is receded back to, it meets with the back of your sideburn. If your father had hair loss in his early 30's, that is likely what you can expect as well. Unless you start some prevention strategy now, while you still have hair. Minoxidil can work for 50% of patients, and finasteride even more. We do have patients pursue surgery even at this stage, but even then the medications are the smartest way to prevent losing more hair as the future approaches. Without any treatment, we know it will progress. Medication can at least slow the loss down, and in some cases keep the amount of hair you have stable for many years.
A: Great question, and one that any experienced injector will be able to answer for you. The areas you mentioned are absolutely the most commonly treated. For the "average" female patient, the Glabella, Forehead, and Crows Feet can total around 50 units. BUT a Board-Certified physician experienced in Botox will usually vary the dose based on your individual characteristics. Some people have stronger or larger muscles, other not. Male patients typically use 25-50% more Botox than females. These adjustments are best discussed during a detailed evaluation.
