You can definitely get a hair transplant to fill in the scar. However, normally I would use beard hair in the neck area or from other beard area to fill in since the hair characters match better with the mustache.

If your surgeon, who removed the melanoma for you, confirmed that the margin of the excision was clear then you could undergo a hair transplant to cover the scar. However, the density of the transplanted hair should be around 15-20 grafts/cm2 since the scar tissue is fibrotic and contains less blood supplies compared to normal skin. The success rate is pretty good despite it's lower than in normal tissue but usually it works! Another hair transplant to touch up the empty gap might be needed.

I had a melanoma in situ removed from the top of my scalp 3 years ago and it left a quarter sized bald spot. The skin appears to have blood flow(blanchable) but is thinner than the rest of my scalp. Is it possible that hair could be transplanted in that spot? Has anyone had success? Thank you in advance!

I would highly recommend someone driving for you since you might probably feel dizzy and tired after the surgery. Usually, you will be prescribed some sleeping pills during the surgery. Therefore, it is safer that you get a taxi to get home.

There shouldn't be any problem for you to get a liposuction done since it's already been 6 weeks and most hair follicles would have been settled to the recipient site already. I would recommend you to maintain good nutrition and good rest :) Seems like you are undergoing a big change so I wish you are happy with your new hair and body! About the meds, please check with your plastic surgeons what medications he/she will prescribe you and if they are going to interact with finasteride.

I have a hair transplant (local anaesthesia) scheduled for late October 2025 and my lipo is scheduled for 6 weeks after. I have lots of PTO days from my company that will all expire by the end of the year so I’d rather used those days to recover. Will the lipo procedure reduce my body’s ability to continue growing the transplanted hair? I’ll also be taking finastride to improve hair growth. I’m wondering if the meds will interact in some way? Is the timeline even safe?

I don’t think it’s realistic or worthwhile to aim for 80–90 grafts/cm². Packing grafts that tightly risks poor survival, and it’s usually better to reserve those grafts for other areas that may need them in the future since hair loss is progressive and often unpredictable.
As for Viagra/Cialis, there has been some experimental research on topical sildenafil, but it’s not commercially available. There’s no evidence that the oral form improves hair growth or graft survival.

Would it be possible to fill the temples of someone who naturally has hair in that area (despite no history of hair loss) to the same density as the surrounding non-bald regions? I understand that transplanting a high density of grafts (e.g., 80–90 grafts/cm²) in a single session is generally not recommended due to concerns about graft survivability. But what if the procedure is split into two sessions: first placing around 50 grafts/cm², then following up with an additional 30–40 grafts/cm² in a second session to reach the target density? Would this staged approach be feasible and safe? Additionally, could medications like Cialis or Viagra during the recovery period help improve graft survival by enhancing blood flow to the scalp?

Kenalog (triamcinolone) is a steroid and not recommended for male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). It’s mainly used for autoimmune hair loss (like alopecia areata), not AGA. Repeated injections can cause skin thinning, visible blood vessels, and fat loss (dents in the scalp) even in diluted form.
For AGA, proven options include finasteride, dutasteride, minoxidil (topical or oral), PRP, low-level laser therapy, and hair transplantation. These are safer and more effective than steroid injections for male pattern hair loss.

I seen a cosmetic dermatologist to discuss tentreatment options for hair loss. One of the options provided was kenalog injections in the scalp. Is this effective for typical androgenetic alopecia? I would have thought it would only be effective for an autoimmune form of alopecia and not so much for typical male pattern baldness? Does this treatment usually yield good results? Are there any worrisome side effects with it? I was told it can sometimes cause thinning of the skin, but that they use a diluted form to prevent that from occurring, but no other possible adverse effects were mentioned. Thank you!

For beard transplant, I either choose non-shaven FUE or long-hair FUE which does not require shaving the patient's donor site. The donor hair will be selectively trimmed to the desired length in non-shaven FUE whereas long-hair FUE does not require any trimming at all.

I have very long thick and curly hair and typically wear my hair in a "man bun" unfortunately i have sparse beard. Im looking for a beard transplant but I want to avoid shaving my head. Is it possible to shave a small portion of the back so that I can still wear my hair in a bun and cover the shaved part? Would long hair FUE be an option. I work with patients daily and I dont want to walk around with a half shaven head.

Ten months are more than enough for using hair products. So you can use keratin conditioner or even dye your hair.

Hi Hope you all have a wonderful day, So I just had my hair transplant 10 months ago, and after every shower, I spray my hair with “two phase keratin conditioner” and I don’t rinse it and it stays in my hair to keep it soft ( that’s how product is supposed to be used). I wonder if this product would harm my transplanted hair and I’m worried can I continue using it safely ? Thank you so much

Can I use Keratin Conditioner after a hair transplant?

I would recommend you to wait until 10-12 months. Some patients are even slow responders and need to wait 18 months. However, meanwhile, you may reach out to your surgeon if he/she offers a free touch up :) and address your concern. If the surrounded area are transplanted hair, I think he/she did a great job. Extraction and implantation of curly hair grafts are quite difficult and require high experience.

I am 8 months post op a hair transplant done in the US by a reputable surgeon that specializes in textured hair (for context my hair is tightly coiled 4c). I have a few concerning areas for growth and density but one area in particular is my frontal scalp barely having any hair in this area. I know I’m supposed to wait until I hit the 12 month mark before I fully worry but I have a hard time believing hair will just appear in this area out of nowhere. I’m not sure if it looks that way because of the way coily hair grows but I doubt it. If that’s actually the case I’m worried the grafts did not survive and I’m going to need a second procedure. The area looks super shiny to me under bright light. When I comb out the whole area it looks less concerning but when I part the hair to examine it, it looks extremely concerning.

The low-level laser therapy helmet or comb could be an additional option to your routine as a maintenance of your existing hair. It requires good compliance depending on the protocol of each brand. Generally, it requires 90 seconds to 7 minutes/session which you use the helmet every other day. It takes at least 4-6 months to see the result. The advantage of the laser helmet is that there is no systemic side effects like oral medication. The question is what is your expectation? If you expect that the laser helmet would bring back the volume or help the hair to regenerate, you would be probably disappointed. From your situation, I would recommend you to keep your serum total vitamin D level (25-OH) above 30 ng/ml. You might want to discuss with a dermatologist about low-dose oral minoxidil or bicalutamide. Checking your thyroid function and serum ferritin is also recommended. I hope this help.

I am a 60-year old woman, who's been trying various lotions/oils/supplements over the past 2 years for female pattern hair loss, possibly stress-related too. My medications probably don't help, as I'm on various blood thinners and blood pressure tablets. I'm often vitamin D and folic acid deficient, probably due to those too. Two years on, I have lost 2/3rds of my hair volume and although no actual baldness, it's very thin on the crown. Will these laser devices help?
