This is an inflammatory acne cyst, which is often triggered by hormones and can flare up around your period. Rosacea is associated with elevated pro-inflammatory enzymes in the skin, which can also contribute to skin redness, sensitivity and acne lesions. Acne cysts are essentially 'balloons' under the skin. They get inflamed and stretch out, but they rarely reach the skin surface, so they cannot be squeezed out. Local intralesional injections of dilute steroid can reduce the inflammation, tenderness and help flatten out the cyst. Sometimes the cyst will recur. If you are prone to cysts on the lower face, discuss topical (less effective) and oral treatment options with your dermatologist. Best, Dr Tsippora Shainhouse
