Allergan recommends 12 units per side based on their clinical trials required for FDA approval.   I seldom inject that much.  My average amount is 6-8 units per side and many patients are quite satisfied with those amounts.  But the range varies according to each patient's goals, muscle movement, and baseline wrinkling.  I have many patients that are very happy with as few as 3 units per side, while some do indeed need the recommended 12 units per side for their desired results.
