Many people have the misconception that the longevity of Juvederm is dependant on an individual’s metabolic rate or their level of physical activity. However, I have treated many professional athletes with Juvederm in the past thinking that it would degrade much faster compared to the average person, but that was not the case. Firstly, how long Juvederm lasts depends on the area that was injected. In areas that have more motion action, such as the lips and the mouth area, the filler will tend to degrade faster. On the other hand, in areas that have relatively less muscular activity, such as the upper forehead, nose and temples, the filler will last longer. It may even last for over a year in some cases. Secondly, the longevity of Juvederm also depends on the amount of hyaluronidase in your body. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that is found naturally in the body that catalyzes the breakdown of Hyaluronic Acid. If you genetically have higher levels of hyaluronidase in your body, the filler will be broken down at a faster rate. Lastly, there are several products in the Juvederm family. Each product in the Juvederm line features different bonding and concentrations of hyaluronic acid, so be sure you know which type of filler your doctor is using. At my clinic, we use the Juvederm Vycross range which is double-bonded, making it longer-lasting!
