PRP is typically isolated by taking whole blood and drawing it up into tubes filled with an anticoagulant. The actual blood testing tubes (blue vs yellow) designate what type of anticoagulant used to prevent the blood from clotting before the PRP can be isolated. Drawing blood into tubes without an anticoagulant will generally lead to clotting, making it very difficult if impossible to obtain any usable amount of PRP. -Dr. Jin
PRP has many beneficial effects on hair regeneration including both improving existing hair growth as well as new hair growth. We have treated pts with failing hair transplant grafts and in a matter of weeks see noticeable improvement of the existing grafts (growing faster and thicker). It is a great treatment for thinning hair but it would be best to consult with your provider to diagnose the exact cause of your hair condition. -Dr. Jin
Unfortunately, there aren’t any large studies validating the optimal concentration of PRP to use for hair regeneration. Based off my years with platelet research, it is not so much the number/concentration of platelets used, rather it is the quality of the platelets themselves. This is why results vary from patient to patient even though one may use a standard concentration of platelets each and every time. Hope the helps. -Dr. Jin
Microneedling is a technique used to create “micro-channels” into the skin, primarily to increase the absorption of any particular topical substance including PRP. Using this technique can be effective but we typically use a combination of direct injections along with microneedling to achieve a more desired effect. Injecting directly helps deliver the PRP directly to the follicle while “micro-needling” allows for more superficial absorption.
It is difficult to say what type of effects minoxidil will have on “hair growth”. Minoxidil, primarily acts by increasing blood flow the follicle and areas around it. In my experience it has helped more with strengthening existing hair and preventing more fallout rather than “growing new hair”. Everyone will respond differently so it would not be unreasonable to try it first and see what effect if any it has.
