Dr. Alvarez performed dental implants for me approximately eight years ago. I live in San Diego, and the trip was easier for me than driving to North County. First, his facilities are cleaner than anything I ever experienced. I would be comfortable having open-heart surgery there. Dr. Alvarez and his staff are top-shelf. I would never hesitate to make the short and stress-free trip again in the future. His work is second to none. Oh, did I mention I saved 35% in $$$ also?

I have been going to Dr. Alvarez for over 20 years because of his ability to stay on the forefront of dentistry and the compassion and caring his staff gives to every patient. I have made the journey from Orange County to Tijuana because of this. I also am now going through my first dental implant. I am amazed how state of the art the guidance system he uses to install the implant as well as verify the viability of the implant site before he even starts treatment.

I have been seeing Dr. Alvarez for over 5 years. After 2 dental implants and other assorted work I have had no problems and to the contrary have had a great experience, who can say that about their dentist? My wife is now having an implant done and a close friend who owns a dental lab was so impressed with Dr. Alvarez's work for me that he and his wife are now patients. My husband and I have been getting all our dental work done at Ricardo Alvarez-Carrera’s office since I first discovered him nineteen years ago when I tripped over our cat, did a swan dive down the stairs and knocked my front teeth out.

I had clients who went to Mexico for dentistry but I do my own homework.

I was impressed by Dr. Alavarez’s credentials: Lloma Linda dental school—one of the most prestigious in the country—and then a three year post graduate residency there. He’s been on the Lloma Linda faculty ever since.

When I first discovered “Dr. A,” I had to make sure his credentials were legit so I had an endodontist friend at Lloma Linda walk over to the Oral Implantology Center to ask about him. All I wanted to know was “Is he who he says he is?” My friend heard accolades galore: “a genius…the most brilliant student to have ever complete the program,” among them.

When I went down to his office in 2001, I was amazed—not that it was so clean and hygienic—but that the equipment was state of the art equipment I had never seen in upscale Newport Beach, CA. That was the first time I ever saw my x-rays projected on a TV screen in front of me. And the X-rays were digital. (My thirty-something former Newport Beach USC graduate dentist was a bit defensive about the fact that he didn’t use digital x-rays at the time, saying: “They’re to what they’re cracked up to be.”) Dr. A also had panoramic full mouth x-rays—something I had not seen before.

My case was complicated. It took 18 months and required a three hour bone graft surgery on my jaw and three gum graft surgeries. (I had so much bone loss he wasn’t able to use synthetic bone.) Dr. Alvarez is so focused and meticulous I found each and every procedure fascinating.

And what a staff he’s assembled! “Dr. Cecilia,” is equally competent—and gentle. I have an auto immune disease that makes my teeth especially sensitive to cold so I have to have my entire mouth anesthetized with cleanings. (Prior to their doing that I used to get physically ill before cleaning appointments.) She always tells me what to expect when she numbs my gums. Recently I asked her how she could describe what I’m going to feel so well. “That’s part of our training,” she said. “We give each other injections so we know what it feels like.”

In the nineteen years since I first discovered Dr. Alvarez-Carrera’s office, my husband and I have been getting all of our dentistry done there: cleanings, fillings, implants and veneers. We have dental insurance so could go anywhere. But I can’t imagine finding the level of care—and caring—we discovered there. Bertha, the receptionist, is wonderful at helping us with insurance paperwork. The trip can take an hour longer than it did nineteen years ago. Dr. Alvarez is an amazing dentist and oral surgeon. I live in the Los Angeles area, so my traveling to TJ is primarily to get the quality Dr. Alvarez provides his patients. (3 hour drive to the dentist!)
My initial procedure was an implant surgery and crown. What particularly amazed me was the quality of his porcelain crowns. (and the implant surgery too) I subsequently had Dr. Alvarez install/replace many many crowns in my mouth. He has a porcelain crown maker who is beyond compare.
You want a movie star mouth? This doctor/dentist is the man for the job.
Suggestion: Book the Grand Hotel while you are in town. hotels.com makes it cheap and easy to book, and the hotel is just around the corner from this dental office. You'll save some money compared to US dentistry and oral surgery, so indulge yourself by staying at this hotel! Nice place similar to the Vegas strip hotels. (they even have a casino!)
"Berta" (assistant to Dr. Alvarez) calls me on my cell phone from time to time to remind me to get cleanings, etc. This I always appreciate. I visit this office partially to visit my amigos and amigas. Tell Dr. Alvarez, Dr. Cecelia, Dr. Fernanda, Berta, I say hi! Cheers

Excellent. I had a fill mouth restoration by Dr Alvarez 5 years ago and have never had one problem He is your very best choice for dental work. I had 14 implants and they feel just like my own teeth, but look much better! I have sent friends and family to Dr Alvarez-Carrerra and they all have had the same positive experience.

Dr. Alvarez-Carrera has been my oral surgeon/periodontist for about seventeen years. When I first sought out high quality implants at competitive pricing on the web I encountered his clinic web page. I have (lifelong) multiple teeth and gum problems. They seem perpetual. Since then his patient teaching style has helped significantly to improve these problems through additional implants and gum surgery. I would say that he is one of exceptional dentist I have encountered in my search for excellent dental health.

In 2013 I was fortunate to discover Dr. Alvarez-Carrera’s website. I needed extensive dental reconstruction and he eventually performed a full mouth restoration. Dr. Alvarez-Carrera’s surgical skills are the highest quality I’ve seen. All of his work has been excellent.

Even though I live in Portland, Oregon, it is worth the time to travel to his clinic in Tijuana, Mexico for treatment.
