There are very few side effects or risks associated with the FemTouch laser procedure. Typically patients will experience a slight discharge and possible some mild staining, but often patients have no side effects at all. We have not had any complications whatsoever as a result of the procedure.

FemTouch is most commonly performed by Gynecologists. While a plastic surgeon is usually adept at performing laser procedures, a Gynecologist will be more well trained at assessing patients who need the procedure as well as assessing the results. In my office, I personally perform the FemTouch on my patients and it is a simple, fast, and painless procedure with excellent results.

The recommendation based on the clinical studies is to have 3 treatments with the FemTouch laser over the course of 10 weeks in order to see the maximum benefit. Many women, however, will notice improvement in elasticity and lubrication a few weeks after the first treatment. As the vaginal tissues improve, the settings on the laser can be adjusted to achieve even more benefit with subsequent treatments.

FemTouch is a painless and quick procedure. The only thing that is slightly uncomfortable for some women is the preparation which requires the doctor to dry the vaginal walls with a gauze to maximize the penetration of the laser into the tissue. This can be mildly uncomfortable, but is not painful. The recovery is minimal. If there is a slight burning sensation, a hyaluronic gel that can be purchased without a prescription can be used for relief.

While it is generally contraindicated to have the FemTouch procedure if you have any type of implant or mesh in the vagina, if your vaginal sling was placed only under the urethra, the procedure could be done deeper in the vagina taking care to avoid delivering any laser to the area right under the urethra.
