Hello, Scars can appear red for many months after a surgical procedure. Hypertrophic scars are not only red but thickened, firm and often raised. Red scars will often fade over time but that time can be 6-12 months or longer. Vascular lasers such as a Vbeam or ExcelV are very effective at improving redness in a scar much more quickly. It can take several treatments for maximum benefit. Lasers can be beneficial for hypertrophic scars as well. I usually recommend a product called Scar Away which is a silicone sheet if patients don't have access to lasers
