Hi Michelle. It sounds like you have recurrent decay underneath the gold crown. If decay is confined and localized, then you are right ....Yes, the tooth can be saved with a new crown. However, if decay goes extensively toward furcated root or below the bone line, then it may not be restorable regardless of new crown. I hope this will help. Thank you
