When I was researching oculoplastic surgeons I couldn’t find many reviews or information about Dr John Holds (despite the fact that he seems to come highly recommended by other experts in his field) so i thought this review would be helpful if anyone else is considering a consultation with him. I have to stress that I have not had surgery with him yet as I’m scheduled for orthognathic surgery first next year but I've been meaning to leave a review about my consultation as it was a very positive experience (i was reminded when one of his recent instagram posts came up on my feed). I’ll update if I am able to have surgery with him in the future. I had already consulted with a few other oculoplastic surgeons before Dr Holds and the main difference I noticed is that despite all his years in practice he was so enthusiastic and passionate about his work. I can’t stress how much of a difference this makes. He took a genuine interest in my case and analyzed my eye area in a detailed way that other surgeons I consulted with did not (or at least didn’t communicate it in the same way) I felt he took a holistic look at everything that was going on with my face and eye area and how it was related and ultimately his recommendations made the most sense to me. Other surgeons had suggested various different things and I was becoming more confused as time went on rather than less. Dr John Holds wrote his analysis down with his surgical recommendations in a detailed document which I also liked. I found the written explaination and the detail it went into very helpful. I didn’t dislike any of the other surgeons I consulted with. They were all experienced surgeons and also took their time to answer any questions I had but the things I highlighted above really made this Dr stand out in addition to his experience and credentials. His plan was also most line with what i was seeing myself (yet as conservative as it could be) I have a reasonably complicated case as i have some skeletal asymmetry and lack of support under my eyes as well as normal aging so I really wanted to make sure I did my due diligence to avoid any complications (especially the dreaded lower lid retraction). It’s really hard to know how a surgeon will react if something goes wrong until it happens but I felt Dr Holds was very reasonable, calm and easy to communicate with and we seemed to be on the same page when it came to expectations. I also get the impression that he takes a lot of pride in his work.Anyway i will definitely update if the surgery happens but for now I would recommend a consult with him even if it might seem to be on the pricier side. The detailed information I was given made it very worthwhile.
Was nervous to begin with and did not know what to expect. Had procedure in the office with great oral anesthesia. Would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone, wonderful, wonderful surgeon. Great to deal with and talk to. I look 10+ years younger.
My left side of my face was severely injured in a "Hit and run" accident while walking across the parking lot last summer 2021. I broke my orbital eye bone on the left side of my face and when the swelling subsided, my left eye was left drastically different from my right eye. I was referred to Dr. Holds by several people. He performed surgery on my right eye to make it look similar to my left eye. I had a subsequent in-office surgery to my right eye as Dr. Holds is an extreme perfectionist. After about 6 months, my left eye had somehow changed again and Dr. Holds performed another in-office procedure to my left to make it match the right eye. The results were perfection which is no surprise because Dr. Holds is a such a perfectionist. he never charged me for the in-office procedures which I would gladly have paid for. Dr. Holds and his staff are true professionals. Never met a physician quite like Dr. Holds. He is also quite personable, interesting and always with a smile. I would highly recommend him to everyone in need of eye plastic surgery.
I paid for my consultation with Dr Holds to discuss upper and lower blepharplasty as well as removing cholesterol deposits by my eyes. I was quoted a price by the Dr and I said I felt I wouldn't do it because the price was very high. Dr Holds said he could do this for less money if I agreed to go under local and not pay for surgery center or anesthesia.. There was not mention of altering the procedure plan. I showed up on day of surgery having paid in advance and discovered they completely dropped the upper blepharplasty. The Dr tried to get me toa 3,000 more for the complete treatment we had agreed to. I will never know if he is a capable surgeon. I do know he is a terrible businessman. Luckily another Gold standard Dr had also quoted me in a no cost consultation. He was priced at the amount I expected to pay the other Dr and his office wrote a completely itemized contract that spells out each procedure. I am greatful to be in better hands and will post the Dr as well as photos when completed
Either the staff doesn't know Dr. Holds offers cosmetic surgery beyond eye lifts, or website is totally misleading. Went in for mid facelift consult (had to tell nurse this was an offering on their website). Was asked q's totally unrelated to my needs including 4 requests for insurance/referral info. Told them repeatedly that I was planning elective surgery so insurance and referral were unnecessary. Was even asked if my situation "bothered me." I said I wouldn't be there if it didn't "bother me". Was asked the "bother me" question repeatedly until I stated in no uncertain terms that my "concerns" were not medically based (come on - this is plastic surgery!!!) Walked out of appt. when nurse turned off lights and INSISTED on eye exam. For a facelift consult???? I told her I had a primary optician, but was told the doctor required the eye exam. I can only think the office was pimping for insurance work beyond cosmetic surgery.
Congenital ptosis surgery is generally much more difficult to achieve perfect results in than adult acquired ptosis. From this one photo and without numerous details it is impossible to know if this is a pretty good result or can be significantly improved on. Having said that, I have certainly redone many similar cases with great results. Muscle function, details of prior surgery, any tendency for the eye to stay open at rest must be known. Definitely a case for someone with extensive congenital ptosis experience.
