Masseter muscle enlargement can definitely alter the shape of the jawline but most people see changes on both sides of their face. Occasionally when patients chew gum, crunch ice or grind their teeth on one side, there can be masseter muscle asymmetry. A quick physical exam should be able to rule out any bony abnormalities and confirm that the asymmetry is due to masseter muscle enlargement. Although this would be an off-label use, any of the commercially available neuromodulators, (Botox, Dysport or Xeomin) could be placed deep within the belly of the masseter muscle to thin the muscle and reshape the jaw contour. You could expect to see the maximal benefit in 6-8 weeks and you may want to get treatments on a regular basis to continue the benefit.
