The short answer is that Botox can be placed with excellent technique and beautiful results with a patient either sitting, or reclined. Here is the long answer: When you get Botox, you should definitely have a full exam prior to injections, as well as a consultation. Some medical problems or prior surgical or non-surgical procedures can influence how Botox acts for you, or how the Provider should approach your treatment. A full assessment should include time where the Provider examines your face in detail, at all angles, and with the full range of expressions, ideally with Before pictures taken. While doing this, your Provider is assessing for the ideal placement, and estimating best dosing of the product. Injection technique can vary, and there is not only one way to achieve great results. Some prefer to have the patients sitting upright. This can be a better way to inject certain muscles, though mainly due to the ability to position your needle for those injections. Lying down can be easier both for the patient and the Provider. Many patients feel anxious with injections, despite Botox being relatively painless. Patients appreciate efforts that minimize discomfort and anxiety. Forehead muscles, crows feet, and glabella are quite easy to inject in this way. The Provider can continue to fine tune their plan in this position, as they are still able to have the patient make expressions, and can easily palpate for muscle boundaries to choose ideal injection points. Be sure you feel confident that your Provider has taken the time to know you, and your face, prior to any injections! One additional note: Fillers are a different ballgame. Positioning for these injections and monitoring for the effects of gravity, skin laxity, facial movement, etc, are extremely important to achieve best results. Hope that helps! ~ Dr. Angell
