After WLS, I was left with excessive loose skin. Dr. Lau has been my surgeon throughout my entire skin removal process. He is patient, caring, listens to my concerns and answers all my questions. My skin hasn’t been the easiest to deal with. Garments caused brush burns, drain bulbs made blisters on my skin and tape rips my skin. Needless to say, he and his staff are the most caring and patient people that have gone above and beyond to care for me. I am 1 week post op from my upper back lift. I never imagined my back would ever look smooth. Dr. Lau amazes me every time!
I had breast augmentation implants done nov 20th by Dr Frank Lau. I have only seen what they look like in the hospital and I am in complete aww. Dr Lau is absolutely amazing! My body has been anything but easy but he has created a miracle. Dr Lau ans his staff are the best of the best hand down. Very pleasant , knowledgable and very real! I cant thank Dr Lau and his staff enough (Amanda and Renata) I am forever thankful to have the best Dr and staff on my side! Updated on 2 Dec 2018: I'm loving my results so far! Will have a nipple revision to make them even but I couldnt be happier!!! My arms are still bruised and swollen. Not much pain. Dr. Lau has done an amazing work on my body. I'm speechless and forever thankful! Updated on 13 Dec 2018: I couldn't be more please with my results from Dr. Lau. He is amazing and the work he has done leaves me speechless! Again, I knew I was in the right place when I first met Dr. Lau. I am forever thankful for him and his staff! Absolutely the best!
My journey with the amazing Dr. Lau and his staff started in April 2017. My first meeting and consult with Renata and Dr Lau I was able to address my areas of concern without hesitation, Dr. Lau listened and gave me options of what he could do to help. I've had an upper body lift with breast lift, upper thigh removal and a revision tummy tuck (fleur de lis) with liposuction by Dr. Lau. I had excessive hanging skin from losing weight with WLS. He and his staff (Renata and Amanda) have always been professional for every appt. Dr. Lau has the best bedside manners, knowledgeable, caring and just overall made me feel comfortable for every appointment and procedure with him. I cannot thank Dr Lau, Renata and Amanda enough for always going above and beyond and listening to any concern I had since day 1. I knew immediately during my consult, I was in the best hands and the care they provide is phenomenal.
As a result of significant weight loss, I was left with excess fat and skin in my abdominal area that caused me lots of stress and embarrassment. After maintaining my weight for more than 3 years I consulted my insurance provider to inquire about coverage for a panniculectomy. They advised that if a surgeon could confirm medical necessity, I would be covered through my policy. Unfortunately, none of surgeons I found in Baton Rouge were willing to bill insurance for the procedure. I called around to several offices and eventually I was referred to LSU plastic surgery. I made an appointment and met with them in mid-2022. I was excited at the thought of possibly losing the excess baggage I’d been carrying around for so long. Dr Lau came into the room with several other people who he never introduced me to or bothered to explain. He was rude and said, “you couldn’t find a Dr in Baton Rouge?”. I jokingly replied “not one that I liked” The visit was quick and to the point which is what I like. He had me show him and the numerous other people in the room my naked body and he told one of them to take some photos. I asked when I would know something, and he said it would be a few weeks. He was dismissive and seemed like he had better things to do. Although he wasn’t super friendly, I didn’t think too much about it. The truth is that I wanted the surgery so if it meant having it completed by a rude Dr who could make it happen…who cares? After several weeks of waiting to hear back, I received a notice that I was denied. I completed an appeal and eventually, I was approved to move forward. My surgery was scheduled for 11/1. I did all the work and made it all happen. Dr. Lau’s office did nothing beyond the initial submission. I even had to call them to tell them the appeal was approved and to get the ball rolling to schedule. I had a pre-op with the NP at the office a few days before the scheduled surgery and reported the morning of 11/1 to have it done. Dr Lau came in about 15 minutes before it was scheduled to start, he told me he needed to mark me for surgery…. literally said no other words to me. When he was done, he walked off and that was the last I saw of him. Of course, I assume he completed the surgery but because I was under anesthesia, I never saw him. My major concerns with Dr. Lau actually start AFTER surgery and could have been avoided had I taken into consideration his initial rudeness when we met earlier in the year. Everything about him said “I couldn’t care less about you or any other patient” When I woke from surgery, I was in extreme pain. I expected as much. I was scheduled to have an outpatient procedure and go home the same day. That didn’t happen. Instead, I ended up in ICU. While preparing to go home, the nurse was showing my husband how to empty my drain and I noticed a concerned look on her face. She never said anything, but I could tell something was wrong. I felt incredibly weak and even mumbling a word here or there seemed to drain me. Again, I expected to feel crappy after such an invasive procedure. She completed her teaching with my husband despite the level of concern she clearly had. She never expressed that she was worried…out loud…. but her face told a different story. She did, however, tell my husband that she needed to make a call and it would be a bit before we would be able to leave. He had been in the waiting area for several hours and was hungry, so he said he was going to go grab a bite to eat and come right back. Shortly after my husband left, another nurse came into the room and quietly spoke with the one who had been present when my husband left. I told them I needed to pee, so they unhooked me from a couple of things and helped me up. I felt strange. I can’t describe what I felt but I knew something was wrong. I took a couple of steps toward the bathroom with each nurse supporting me on opposite sides. I told them I felt weak. Something was wrong. I said I can’t make it. The next thing I know, I am back in bed surrounded by several hospital staff members. Their conversation was confusing and all I could do was ask for my husband. The staff was frantic, and I knew something serious was going on. I heard them call my husband and tell him that I was being rushed back into the ER. I heard them tell him that I was losing too much blood. Again, I slipped away. When I woke back up, my husband was next to me and there was a Dr. speaking to him. He was saying that I needed a blood transfusion due to massive loss. He asked me to sign for the blood and I could not. I didn’t have the strength. My husband signed. Before I continue, please understand that I am not upset about the blood loss or the need for a transfusion. I knew this was a possibility when I signed off on all the risks. I didn’t EXPECT it, if I am being honest. I have had numerous surgical procedures in the past and felt that this would be just as those were. I didn’t EXPECT it, but I knew in advance that it could happen. What bothers me is that Dr Lau never came back to see me or even speak to my husband. The second surgery was performed by a resident Dr at the hospital. Dr. Artz…who was amazing, btw. After the surgery to fix the cause of the loss, which I am still unclear about, and to receive 2 units of blood, I was placed in ICU. My blood pressure was incredibly low and unstable. It had been that way since the first procedure. The first noted that I see is 89/51 with oxygen saturation of 91%. My chart notes show that Dr Lau was contacted several times after it was noted that there was something wrong but the decision to return me to the OR was made by hospital staff, not him. Although the notes don’t state that he didn’t respond….it appears to me that he did not. While in the ICU I was cared for by Dr Artz and some incredible nurses. Not once did Dr Lau come to see me. I was released to the general hospital floor early in the morning on 11/2 and discharged from the hospital later that afternoon. On 11/6, I contacted Dr Lau’s office after leaving a message by phone for someone to call me. When I went into the hospital for surgery, I weighed 125 pounds. I was up to 145 pounds at that time and my body was severely swollen. I sent a message to express my concern and to see if that was something that I needed to be worried about. Additionally, massive bruising on both inner thighs had appeared. No one responded or contacted me back. I called a nurse line and they said I needed to go to the ER. I went to the ER where I ended up not getting any additional information because they were so focused on starting an IV through my completely blown veins that after 5 painful attempts and sheer frustration, I walked out. On 11/7, I sent a message through mychart to ask about my bandages. They had begun to lift in various places, and they were not going to hold up until my appointment on 11/11. I sent photos of the bandages along with my message. I messaged Dr Lau as well as the NP Amada Gregoire. I was never contacted back. On 11/10 I made the decision to not drive back to New Orleans for my follow up. During my surgery there were complications. After my surgery, I had concerns. During all of it, the Dr didn’t care enough to even contact me or to even have someone else contact me. I went online and cancelled the appointment out of respect for anyone else who might need one. On the morning of 11/11, I was finally contacted at 10:21... after what would have been my follow-up appointment. A message was left by Pat who said that I had to be seen that day, so they needed me to call them. I did to them what they had done to me. I ignored the message. They have never contacted me again. I removed my own drain on 11/13. I redressed and cared for my surgical wounds myself. I am now 24 days post op; my incision is completely closed, and I have very little pain from time to time. There are brief moments when I can’t stand straight up but that comes with the territory and will completely go away over time. Dr Lau and his staff don’t care about patient care…or at least they didn’t care about me and the care that I received. I was desperate to have the surgery, so I pushed my instinct to the side and ignored everything telling me to keep looking. I won’t say that I suffered medically because of his care. I didn’t. The incision was ugly, and I worried that it would be a mess to look at once it healed but as the swelling continues to reduce, the incision gets less and less ugly. I believe that a Dr should care and be responsive to his patients. My procedure was billed to insurance at $52,000. For that amount, a phone call wasn’t much to ask for, in my opinion.
