I had my braces off a month ago, but I haven't worn my retainers and I now have a 5mm gap between my teeth, what can be done?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)

Hello, sjshdfj96.  If possible, wear your retainers.  The retainers may fit tight and cause some soreness to your teeth and gums, similar to when you first had your braces.  Wear your retainers as much as possible.  The only time you should remove your retainers is to eat, drink, brush your teeth, or while playing contact sports.  This may help close the gap.  If doesn't help or if you cannot get your retainer back in, make an appointment to see your orthodontist.

If I wear my Invisalign retainer 24 hrs a day will my teeth straighten out or will that make them worse? (Photo)

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
I would try wearing the retainer 24 hours a day.  If that doesn't work, return to your orthodontist and ask what they would suggest.

Also, I advise my patients to wear their retainers 24 hours a day after they have completed their Invisalign treatment.  The teeth are prone to moving back to their previous positions if you don't wear your retainers.  Only after the first year of retainer wear do I recommend night time wear only.

Hate the feel of attachment glue/resin smeared on my teeth. Any suggestions?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Hello, MaryDublin.  It may just take some time to get used to the feeling.  If after a few days or a week, it doesn't feel better, I would suggest contacting your orthodontist and scheduling an appointment to go in and have it checked.

Another thing, are you wearing you Invisalign all the time?  If you aren't then I suggest wearing them as much as possible.  The only times you the aligners should be out of your mouth is when you are, eating, drinking anything but water, and brushing/flossing your teeth.  If you have your aligners in, you shouldn't feel any roughness from the attachments.

Essix retainer cost for just upper teeth.

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Hello, Valenciawright.  You can wear the last aligner as a retainer.  Over time though, it should be replaced.  I think now is a good time for you to replace it.

Costs of retainers can vary from orthodontist to orthodontist and location to location.  A lot of factors go in to pricing such as cost of materials.  In our office it is $250 for an essix retainer.  As a reference point, we are located in southern California.

Vivera retainers from Invisalign may be a good option for you.  In our office the cost of Vivera is $375 for one arch.  This means the top teeth only or the bottom teeth only.  For $375 you get 4 retainers total which is nice as you'll have back-ups in case you lose or break your retainer.  Even if you don't lose or break one, you can switch to a new fresh and clean retainer after a few years.

Am I Able To Drink Smoothies With invisalign inside my mouth?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Hi, Agurl1.

I don't recommend drinking anything but water with you Invisalign aligners in.  Drinks such as smoothies can have a lot of sugar.  The smoothie can get inside you aligners and get trapped in there.  As such, the sugar would just be sitting on your teeth for an extended period of time which could leave to cavities.  Best practice would be to remove your aligners before drinking.  To take it a step further, rinse out your mouth with water or even drink some water before placing your aligners back in.  Good look with your Invisalign treatment!

I just had my tooth extracted. But braces bonding only be in 2 weeks times. Will it be ok?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Hello,

Barring any complications with your healing after the extractions are performed, you should be fine to get the your braces on in 2 weeks time.  If you do experience any complications or delays in healing, consult with your dentist/orthodontist about if you need to delay putting the braces on.

How to floss with Invisalign? I'm getting my trays tomorrow, should you floss while the trays are on or off your mouth?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Hello,

You will not be able to floss with your Invisalign trays in as they completely cover your teeth.  You will be able to brush and floss normally, just take your Invisalign trays out.

I had braces installed in another state and I've since moved. Can I get another dentist to keep the treatment going?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Hello,

It is possible to transfer treatment to a new orthodontist.  You would need to find a dentist in your area that takes transfer patients.  I would suggest contacting your previous orthodontist and ask them if they can help you find a new orthodontist in your area.  They can try to help you find someone that uses the same type of braces that you currently have.  Any office that you transfer to would most likely want to see x-rays, photographs and a treatment card from your previous dentist.

Got gum swelling with braces, is this a indication of a gum infection and how to I get rid of it?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
It is possible that the swelling is partly due to the braces.  With braces, it can be harder for patients to brush along the gum line.  I recommend that patients with braces brush their teeth for a total of 4 minutes.  In addition to brushing the teeth and the braces, be sure that you are placing the bristles of the brush along the gum line.  You should also be flossing once a day.  You may experience bleeding for a few days, but this will go away after the gums have healed.   If the swelling doesn't get any better, make an appointment to see your dentist.

How does Invisaline Straighten Teeth?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Hello, Celine.  With Invisalign, the patient has a set number of aligners or "trays" per treatment.  Each tray is made specifically for the patient.  At the beginning of treatment a mold of the teeth are taken.  This can be done either digitally using a scanner such as an iTero machine or with alignate.  From the mold, Invisalign and your doctor prescribe a set of trays that will eventually move your teeth to the desired position.  Patients wear a set of trays for a set amount of time (usually 2-3 weeks).  After wearing your trays, you move to the next set. Each set of trays is shaped differently.  This creates a small amount of movement so that over time your teeth are gradually shifting.  The changing of trays is similar to having your dentist adjust your braces.  Think of each tray swap as a tightening of your braces.

The following is from the Invisalign website:
Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won't even know you're straightening your teeth.
