What is the best fix for this black triangle? I'm 22 year old. (photos)

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
With the small amount of space and the excellent condition of your teeth, I would not recommend veneering your teeth.  By bonding a small amount of material the space could be closed.  My recommendation would be to see a periodontist to determine if there is an underlying gum problem that needs addressed.  There is also a treatment where dermal fillers can be injected into the gum to plump it back up and no treatment of the teeth would then be required.

Multiple CEREC Crown Failures, is Sirona or my Dentist responsible and what can or should be done?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
I would recommend discussing this with your dentist.  Cerec crowns can be made of many materials.  If they were done many years ago some of the stronger materials that we use today may not have been available.  I tell my patients that the only unbreakable crown is full gold.  If the patient desires a more cosmetically appealing tooth restoration there is a chance of breakage.  If the tooth is prepared properly and the correct material is used breakage is unusual.  Other factors like tooth grinding or chewing overly hard foods could cause failure. Dentists can't always be responsible for the way a patient treats their teeth anymore than a car dealer is if a customer abuses their car. I can tell you that Cerec would not be responsible for your broken crowns and it would be up to the discretion of your dentist.  With the current materials, if I had a patient whose crown broke I personally would replace it because I am confident the chance of breakage is minimal.

Front tooth implant, zirconia abutment with e-max crown vs metal abutment with empress crown?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
There are some factors that may enter into the thinking of each doctor.  The doctor recommending a zirconium and emax crown sounds like a better choice with the limited information to go on.  Emax comes in different translucencies and any quality lab should be able to masque out the underlying whiteness of the zirconium.  A metal, usually titanium, abutment is more difficult to masque out the darkness, especially with Empress.  The problem with metal abutments and sometimes even with the implant itself is that the dark metal makes the gum look dark below the level of the crown.  The only reason titanium may make more sense is if the space is very small and the zirconium would be too thin and subject to fracture.  Discuss your concerns with the dentist and make sure you are content before the case is cemented.

Are dental crowns supposed to look and feel bulky? (Photo)

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
It is difficult to tell from looking at your picture whether the crown is too large.  It is possible that the dentist made this tooth larger to fit against the opposing tooth more ideally than your original molar.  Small changes can feel very different but after a short time become unnoticeable.  The inflammation could be related to your home care or there are other reasons that could be a factor.  I would recommend that you practice perfect hygiene and if the symptom does not resolve in two weeks then return to your dentist for a reevaluation.

Can my teeth be saved? I am terrified and embarrassed (Photo)

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
The sooner you see a dentist, the more options you will have and the less it will cost.  Waiting longer will almost certainly guarantee losing many teeth, as well as the potential of pain, swelling, infection, or worse.  It is impossible to give you a diagnosis based on your pictures without X-rays and a clinical exam. Seek out a dentist who offers a payment program so that you can fit the care into your budget.  Most people even with limited income can afford dental care if they make it a priority.  Good luck!

Can you give me information on CEREC crowns over the conventional crown technology?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
We offer Cerec crowns in our office.  Excellent dentistry can be done the old way of impressions and lab fabricated crowns or Cerec.  Where Cerec has an advantage is that the crown is finished in the same appointment so you do not need to be numbed twice or endure the crown insert without anesthesia the second appointment.  Cerec also allows less tooth reduction because the crown is bonded to the tooth and a you can leave more tooth since you don't have to retain a temporary crown for several weeks.  Instead of messy impressions, Cerec uses a digital scanner (like a camera) that is more accurate than impressions and models.  Bottom line is the quality of the treating dentist. A good dentist will give you a good result with either method.

Is it true when you have your teeth whitened they only do 16 8 at the top and 8 at the bottom?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
When professionally whitening teeth there is not a rule that limits which teeth can be whitened.  Most patients want their teeth to be uniform so whitening only the front 8 may leave some teeth that can be seen different in color.  Over the counter products like strips are limited in their coverage, but professional whitening is not. Perhaps your back teeth have been restored with crowns which will not whiten.  That is my only guess as to why your dentist is not whitening the rest.

I replaced a 10 year crown on #30 because of a slight gum recession at the corner next to #29. Should I worry? (Photo)

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
It is always best to replace missing tooth with missing tooth and missing gum with missing gum.  That being said, if there was extensive decay on the root surface or a previous restoration, then gum cannot be grafted over the restoration.  It appears that you have too narrow of attached gingiva (gum) remaining.  I would recommend seeing a periodontist to get an opinion.  Good luck!

Can my bite be put back where it was after receiving new front crowns on 5 teeth? It has changed my tooth size and shape (Photo)

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Unfortunately, the only solution is to replace the crowns which were just done.  Usually if changes are being made it is best to try the crowns in before final cementation and get the patients approval.  If you did not have the chance to do so your dentist may feel obligated to replace them to make you happy.  If you did approve them and now are not happy your dentist has much more cost and time involved to correct them.  Talk to your dentist and let them know what you dislike.  Good luck.

Can you lengthen veneers without having to replace the entire veneer?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
It depends what your veneers were made of.  Porcelain which I feel is the best choice cosmetically, can not be added to.  If you had them done in high school and were able to file them down yourself, it is possible that they were done with composite resin.  If they are composite, that could be added to provided the rest of the material is in good condition.  At this point, if you are a perfectionist, it may be best to start over with porcelain if your budget allows.  Good luck!
