Is LASIK a safe procedure?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Overall, when compared to potential complications from wearing contact lenses, the safety of LASIK is very similar.  However, we now perform more ASA (Advanced Surface Ablation) over LASIK because it removes the risks associated with making the corneal flap and thus, our evidence suggests that ASA is even safer than contacts.  We also have improved the technique of ASA so that the recovery is very similar to LASIK.

Of course, as long as your corneal curvature and corneal thickness is normal.  For under-correction, enhancements can be done as early as 3 months.  For over-correction, best to wait up to 6 months.

Cysts under Flap after Lasik?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Cysts under the flap are not a problem if your vision is not affected.  If it does affect your vision, these cysts can be removed by your eye surgeon by simply lifting the flap and removing the cells with a sterile sponge.  There's a 10% incidence of this occurring in people who LASIK over 3 years prior to an enhancement procedure.

This is entirely normal to experience halos and starbursts at 21 days postop.  It takes a considerable time for the flap swelling to completely resolved and for the corneal stroma to remodel.  Also, dry eyes contribute to this problem.  Age also plays a factor; older people take longer to resolve healing issues. Typically, night vision reaches its best at 6 mos postop.

LASIK is a very good alternative to treat astigmatism, myopia, or hyperopia after undergoing astigmatism and is performed quite regularly for this purpose.  This is much safer than attempting to remove your current intraocular and then try to replace it with another power.

It's not that unusual to experience ghosting within the first 3 mos after LASIK.  This typically resolves but it can be due to a flap shift resulting in corneal striae (your eye doctor would see this) or residual or induced astigmatism.  In most cases, all of these issues can be treated successfully.  If it is a flap shift, the earliest treatment possible is best, if it's due to residual or induced astigmatism, you can wait as long as you wish.

This usually causes no long-term problems so I wouldn't worry about the eye rub.  However, I'd be more concerned regarding the shower and getting tap water in your eyes.  Tap water is not sterile and in fact contains fungus and protozoans such as acanthamoeba which can cause serious eye infections especially while the surface of your eye is not healed after PRK.  It's ok to take a shower, just make sure you cover your eyes well with a towel so that the water does not run directly into your eyes.

Can You Get LASIK Surgery at Age 13?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)

Although LASIK can be performed off label, I wouldn't do it for a 13 y.o.  My main concern is that younger people, especially those under 18 years of age, have very placid corneas.  Placing and incision in this young of cornea while making the LASIK corneal flap puts the cornea at risk for instability and later ectasia.  That said, however, if all other factors were normal and there was plenty of corneal thickness, I would consider PRK instead of LASIK since no corneal flap is necessary for PRK.  I would seriously consider this for a 13 yo who is highly anisometropic (and thus unable to wear glasses) and who would be unable to wear a contact lens safely.

Dry Eyes Problem. How to Fix?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)

Of course keeping your eyes closed as much as possible would help your dry eyes but, not very practical especially if you have to work to earn a living.  We use many treatments for dry eyes including punctal plugs, restasis, and serum tears which typically, all help solve the problem better than over the counter tear drops.

In reality, the LASIK flap is always there.  I have patients over 10 years after LASIK and I can still dissect their flap free for an enhancement if necessary.  That said, the best analogy would be like preparing chicken for dinner - the skin on a chicken will never fall off on it's own but it's not hard to remove with the proper tools.
