Spironolactone is a great medicine for hormonal acne; it should only be used by females since it blocks the male hormones. It is a potassium-sparing diuretic, but can decrease sodium and magnesium; so it is important to get electrolyte blood work done before starting this medicine and at least once more after being on the medicine for a month. If both lab results are normal, no further monitoring is necessary.
