Dear GinaC,
The stretching of the virgin skin with implants can produce significant
stretch marks (which are actual dermal
scars and permanent) if: The size selected is too large for the chest wall, the surgical pocket is too small, the prosthesis is too high profile, the original breast volume is minimal or if you're predisposed to having stretch marks - look at your belly, arms or thighs - if they are there they'll also be in your breasts.
If you didnt' get stretch marks during pregnancy and you restore your lactational size with implants, it's unlikely you'll develop stretch marks. The degree of skin elasticity can be generally determined by the speed of 'snap recoil' when pinched. The faster the snap (try it on your upper arm) the better the elasticity and the lesser the chance of stretch marks in your breasts.
The more breast tissue you have prior to the augmentation the less chance of producing stretch marks - the breast tissue acts as a 'buffer' between the implant and the skin, minimizing the tension. If the implants are placed
under the muscle there's another buffer - the muscle itself and the less likely you'll have stretch marks.
However, stretch marks are often minimized by using moisturizing lotions that contain cocoa butter, shea butter and aloe vera starting about one week postoperatively. Whenever you see a 'waxy' look on the breast it usually means
dry skin that responds nicely to moisturizers - liberally applied. In this case more is better.
The type of implant also contributes to stretch marks. The high profile variety concentrates the tension centrally and hence increases the likelihood of stretch marks. The lower profile variety distributes the tension along the perimeter of the enhanced breast and reduces the propensity to stretchmarks.
If you're ever troubled or concerned by stretch marks, you may consider doing the augmentation in different size stages, using inflatable prosthesis (as we do in
breast reconstruction) or starting with saline and ending up with silicone gel prosthesis once you reach the size you like. This is much more expensive than using creams, but if you're serious about the stretch mark impact on your appearance it might be worth the price.
