Rubber bands are typically used to correct the bite (shifting the top teeth relative to the bottom teeth). So if you haven't been wearing your elastics (rubber bands) then you won't be correcting your bite. When you visit your orthodontist, he or she will make a recommendation as to whether to start wearing them again.
