My approach to tooth decay starts with a full examination and x-rays to determine the cause, prognosis and adequate treatment. Reasons for a tooth to chip at the gum line could be related to a cavity or occlusal forces (biting, grinding, clenching) on teeth. If the chipping is related to a cavity, it’s a bacterial cause. A deep oral cleaning will eliminate the bacterial issues followed by placing a restoration (dental filling) to cover the damaged area. In other cases gum grafting (surgical procedure to repair areas gum has receded) may be needed. If it’s caused by occlusal forces, I would need further examination to determine proper treatment.
