Deciding whether or not to undergo plastic surgery is anxiety enough. How about upping the ante and broadcasting the procedure live to the world? It’s strange, but true, in this week’s round-up.
Recently in South China, a breast augmentation was broadcast live over the Internet. The procedure, done at the Huamei Cosmetic and Surgery Clinic, aired via the hospital website. The patient, a part-time model and student, completely supported the idea. "I believe the medical procedure will achieve better results with public supervision," she said. Hmmm.
The live broadcast caused quite a stir in the traditionally conservative country of China. Public nudity is considered “off-limits” and Ms. Liuhan’s breasts were barely blurred.
Many people were upset and blamed the clinic for doing this just for sensationalized purposes. The live broadcast seemed more for entertainment vs. education. "A video of surgery might be useful for hospitals as a record or for teaching or supervision, but it's improper to show it on the Internet for people of all ages," said Yi Shenghua, at Beijing's Yingke Law Firm.
The clinic defended itself, saying, "The live broadcast was an attempt to give the public a deeper, more rational understanding of plastic surgery," said clinic director, Li Xinsen.
This may not fly in the U.S., according to discussion on RealSelf.
“In the US, the medical/legal issues would most likely preclude doing a broadcast. In the late 1990's, I was filmed by a local T.V. station a breast aug[mentation] with after[wards] in-studio interviews. I contacted the Board of Medicine and had the chairman present in studio to cover any issues. [It was] Still very difficult to arrange,” said Darryl J. Blinski, MD.
Hmmm...live plastic surgery broadcasts in the U.S.? Can the Real Housewives please get in line?
