Lip Augmentation Skyrockets in the United States
Lip augmentation has become one of the most talked about procedures in recent months. Fuller lips are THE desired cosmetic treatment, so it’s no surprise that there were a record number of lip augmentations in 2015. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons state that lip augmentation procedures are the 2nd fastest facial procedure since 2000. LIP AUGMENTATION STATISTICS Over the course of 1 year, there were a total of 27,500 lip augmentations. The statistics show that the increase occurred throughout the entire US, not just in specific areas. It’s not only women opting for these treatments; it’s a growing trend among both genders. Surgeons across the country are seeing an increase in lip implants as well as any form of lip injections, including Juvederm and Restylane Silk. MOST REQUESTED CELEBRITY LIPS Recently, ASPS commissioned a survey to over 1,000 women that revealed that their number 1 celebrity lip inspiration was Jennifer Lawrence, followed by Scarlett Johansen 2nd, and Angelina Jolie 3rd. Kylie Jenner has also sparked a great deal of lip augmentation interested for those in their 20’s and 30’s after revealing that her larger lips are not merely due to makeup techniques or sucking on bottle but have been injected with hyaluronic acid, as many predicted. At Utah Facial Plastics, we find that the increase is also due to the fact that a beautifully natural results can be achieved, which makes patients more likely to request repeated treatments. Our injectors typically prefer Juvederm for lip augmentation, due to it’s smooth consistency and safety. It also has received a one-year indication for the lips so it’s not a treatment that requires numerous visits to keep up the results. A lip augmentation procedure taxes approximately 30 minutes in-office and we apply numbing cream 20 minutes prior to treatment to minimize discomfort. It’s best to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E and fish oil for approximately 3-5 days before treatment and avoid alcohol a few days before and after.
