IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) for Acne and Rosacea

by

Rosacea is problem with very red facial skin, that varies from mild flushing (particularly with alcohol or exercise) to painful red swelling. Traditionally it is a very difficult problem to treat, with very little proven effective therapies. The IPL is the best known treatment for this disease. The IPL's light is absorbed by the abnormal vessels in the skin and this leads to their eventual disappearance. Of note, the IPL is a temporary measure. The abnormal vessels can grow back in 6 - 24 months. However, it does give fairly long lasting control, when there is no other good treatment option. Recalcitrant acne is also treated very well with the IPL.

The acne handpiece of the IPL controls acne in a couple ways. It reduces the secretion of oils by the sebaceous glands and it kills the bacteria that causes acne. This can lead to a 6-12 month remission of the acne and circumvent the need for oral antibiotics or Accutane. Breakouts, if they occur, are usually fairly easy to control with topical therapy.
