Hair Loss & Thinning of the Brows - What are possible reasons?

Countless Reasons for Eyebrow Loss:Surprisingly, there are over 100 different reasons to have eyebrow loss. I know this for a fact because I have a teaching handout for trainees who work with me at the University of Toronto that lists all the bewildering array of causes.

Fortunately, the cause of most individual's eyebrow loss boils down to just a handful of causes.

Causes of eyebrow loss and treatment include:

HYPOTHYROIDISM. Low thyroid levels can cause eyebrow hair loss especially at the margins of the brows. A blood test for TSH can diagnose low thyroid; treatment is thyroid replacement

OVER  PLUCKING. Overstyling of the brows is very common. Treatment options include hair restoration surgery, minoxidil

ALOPECIA AREATA. This is an autoimmune disease. Hair loss can occur only on the eyebrows albeit that is not common - most people also have areas of scalp hair loss.  Treatment includes corticosteroid injections, topical steroids, Rogaine and other treatments too.

FRONTAL FIBROSING ALOPECIA. This is an autoimmune condition causing permanent scarring hair loss. Treatment includes steroid injections, and immunosuppressive pills and hormone blockers.

TRICOTILLOMANIA. Self induced pulling of the eyebrows affects 3-4 % of the population. Often associated with anxiety, depression or obsessive compulsive disorder. Treatment includes various medications and psychotherapy

AGE RELATED CHANGES. Some individuals develop reduced eyebrow density with aging.  Treatment includes minoxidil, bimatoprost and hair restoration surgery.

TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM. Hair shedding disorders give hair loss in the scalp and rarely eyebrows. Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the shedding (stress, diet, low iron, medications)

All in all these are some of the most common but many, many  other reasons are possible. A dermatologist can guide with a diagnosis and treatment plan.
