Cosmetic Surgery; The Naked Truth;  5 Facts about treating Puffy Nipples

Puffy Nipples/Areola is quite a common version of gynecomastia, especially among young adult men.  It is caused by fat or breast gland  under the areola which creates a domed or puffy shaped nipple. Like most types of gynecomastia, it is not a medically serious problem but creates anxiety  and embarrassment for many young men.  Here are 5 facts you should know about treatment

1)    Liposuction

If your puffy nipples are determined to be caused purely by fatty adipose tissue, they can be corrected by liposuction alone.  Your board certified plastic surgeon will help determine if you just have fat tissue or if you have glandular tissue as well.

2)    Excision

If you do have firm, glandular breast tissue underneath the areola, your surgeon may determine it is necessary to use excision surgery.  This means that part or all of the breast gland will be removed, resulting in a flat chest.

3)    How Long Will It Take?

This surgery is short!  It usually takes two hours or less to complete.

4)    The Results

Recovery is short as well taking about one or two weeks with very minimal scarring.  Additionally, men who had large areolas before surgery will notice that after puffy nipple surgery, their areolas will additionally shrink in size and tighten due to the removal of tissue underneath the skin.

5)    Who’s a Candidate?

Forms of gynecomastia in adolescents will usually resolve on their own within two years without any surgical intervention.  For this reason, many patients wait until they are at least 18 to have surgery.  However, if your puffy nipples have persisted for more than three years, book a consultation so a board certified surgeon like myself can determine if surgery is a good option for you.
