Breast implant safety drive launched


The new National Institute of Aesthetic Research (NIAR), set up last month by surgeons and a fundraising charity (The Healing Foundation), has wasted no time in kicking off its first campaign. Breast implant manufacturers worldwide are being invited to contribute the equivalent of £1 per implant sold towards funding a research program aimed at improving all aspects of breast implant safety, treatment and aftercare.

Areas of research will include analysising existing data on breast surgery to provide evidence-based advice for surgeons to help define ‘best practice’, scientific research into the causes of capsular contracture and research into the safety and efficacy of surgical techniques in breast implant surgery.
