The first question that they should ask their physician who's a cosmetic surgeon is, "What is your credentials?" I think in this age and time, there are a lot of specialties entering the field of cosmetic. Definitely there are a lot of qualified surgeons and physicians that fit into under the umbrella of cosmetic medicine. That's why I'm very adamant about letting the public know that "Safety First".

You want a surgeon that's board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ask the doctor or his staff where are the credentials, where is he trained, what board is certifying him? It's very easy to verify that online. The web is an amazing tool. A double-edged sword, it can actually mislead some patients. That's one of the first questions, and they should ask about the doctor's experience.

All honest doctors will share with them their good and their bad results. Everybody has less than ideal results. The patients should be aware of that. This is an art and a science at the same time. For an augmentation, after you've identified the credentials and you're happy with the before and after pictures, it's really what the patient wants and what the patient needs.

I always try to listen first and see what the patient is trying to tell me because I can see it with the eye of an expert, a trained professional; the patient sees it from a standpoint of her physique, her body, in front of a mirror, whether clothed or unclothed, and that's where they have to feel comfortable. A lot of patients will tell you what they want by gestures. If they can't use the same words we use, which is fine, but I think when they express themselves, you can extrapolate it from which direction you need to go.

There are a lot of ways to address the breast. If there's a lot of nipple ptosis where the nipple has gone below the fold, a lot of patients might require a combination of a lift and an aug. Some patients don't like prosthesis. They're always fearful of having a foreign body under their skin and you could always help them to understand that there are a lot of ways to improve the contour and the shape of their breast.

I do a lot of combination procedures - breast lift with an augmentation or a lift which is rearranging the breast tissue to give them a fuller appearance, more contour, more projection and improve the position of the nipples so that it appears more youthful.
