So an Asian eyelid surgery. Anatomically, Caucasians, or people of other ethnicities, have a double eyelid fold. About 50% of the Asians were born without it and 50% do have it. When you create a double eyelid fold, it make your eyes look bigger, it makes it look brighter. It's not really westernizing so much because the double eyelid is not only found in Western culture, it's found in Asian culture too, it's just the way the eyelid folds, fuses as you're withdrawing the lid up, it creates that natural fold. It just gives you a much bigger eye appearance. So depending on what technique, there's a couple of techniques for having it, an incisional technique and a non-incisional suture technique. I actually did a 10 week fellowship in Korea to learn that technique and the differences are obviously with the more trauma you have the more incisions you take, and the strip of muscle you take, it's a longer recovery. So I would say maybe ten days to two weeks, whereas the suture technique it's more like seven to 10 days, maybe five days to seven days, something like that. That's when you get the majority of your swelling to go down. I think in either case it still takes about a month or a month and a half for you to have a natural fold. But within seven to ten days you should feel okay to be presentable in public.

An Asian Eyelid Fold Is a Very Desirable Trait, But How Is It Created?

Asian eyelid surgery creates a double fold for those of Asian descent born with a single lid, explains Dr. George Min.
