The liquified fat does get resorbed by the body but very slowly. During that time there can be a lot of inflammatory reaction in the area of the slurry (the liquified fat left in the area). This inflammatory reaction can leave a certain amount of mass in the area and that is why some individuals don't see much change if suctioning is not performed. While open drainage from the incisions allows for much of the slurry to drain out, if larger areas are done without suctioning, there is just too much slurry left and remodeling of the mass in the area occurs.
