I am so sorry you are going through this pain and unhappiness. It pains me to see plastic surgeons still do alar base reductions by cutting away the nostril and sewing it back on the face. Most of the people that are unhappy with their rhinoplasty is because the surgeon did an alar base reduction and caused the nostrils to be uneven. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do after this has been done. We can only inform/help others of our experiences and warn other people of these uncaring doctors who still practice this procedure.
Hi Michelle, who may I ask did your rhinoplasty? I am a very strong opponent against alar base reduction. Nostrils are extremely delicate and any part of your nostril should NOT be cut off your face and sewn back on. This is an almost impossible procedure to accomplish and some plastic surgeons say this is an easy procedure!
I myself had an alar base reduction years ago and after looking at my result and results from other people it is a procedure that should absolutely not be advocated in plastic surgery but in only very extreme cases. It is an abused procedure used by doctors who do not have your best interests at hand. It is 100% impossible as well as irreversible for a doctor to remove the same amount of skin on both sides of the nose. Doctors are not removing cartilage but skin & tissue (muscular and nerve) that have an extremely intimate relationship with your other facial features. In short, your nostril is cut off your face and sewn lower down on your face. There are effects (short & long term) of this horrendous and unnatural looking procedure. Some of these effects will be a weakened nose structure, asymmetry, difficulty breathing, etc. As you age people who have had this procedure will have a high probability the nostrils will collapse because the support (alar base) has been removed. Doctors who are advocates of this procedure do not tell all there is about this procedure. Remember plastic surgery is a business and a lot of doctors are in it to make all the money they can. Just because there is a Dr. in front of their name doesn't mean they put your interests as their top priority. Very few will be upfront and honest with you at the risk of losing money. Unfortunately & regrettably there is nothing than can be done after this procedure is performed. This procedure should NOT be advocated by the Board of Plastic Surgeons.
