Bell's palsy (or facial palsy) is characterized by facial drooping on only one side of the face. The drooping is due to malfunction of the facial nerve (VII cranial nerve), which controls the muscles of the face. This condition results in a drooping of the mouth and/or eye lid of one side of the face.
The onset of Bell’s palsy often occurs overnight with no known cause or previous diagnosis. There is some thought that it could occur as a result of trauma to the face or a viral infection, but usually there is no definite diagnosis. Fortunately, Bell’s palsy disappears as quickly as it appeared, over night. However, the condition usually lasts 4-6 weeks.
