The first time I had surgery, I was crazy wigged out beforehand. Ended up being (relatively) a piece of cake. This was my 3rd actual surgery (wisdom teeth don't count) and I definitely think that knowing what to expect is helpful. On the other hand, once they get you back for preop they'll probably give you some of the good stuff to help you relax - at that point you won't really give a rat's a$$ about anything anymore! The first few days were pretty rough, and I know I was wondering what in the world if gotten myself into, but truthfully that only lasted a couple days. I was on my own and went out for coffee with friends then lunch with my hubs on postop day 2. Postop day 5 I was back to work. The worst of it should pass pretty quickly! I'm a complete wimp, and it really was better than I expected. I'd totally do it again - it's so worth it! Hang in there!! :)
I'd check with your PS first - mine told me not to get anything ahead of time. He provided a postop bra at my 1st postop apt (the day after surgery), which I had to wear 24/7 (except for showering) for 2wks. At the 2wk mark, I was given the go-ahead to wear any bra I wanted, as long as it was comfortable and didn't bother my incisions. Another reason for waiting - I had bought a new swimsuit ahead of time, guessing on size, and it totally did not fit (too small!!).
I had my surgery in Feb, so I went with sweat pants and one of my husband's (very baggy on me) full-zip sweatshirts. For summertime, maybe some loose shorts or yoga pants with an oversized full zip or button up shirt. You won't want anything that you have to tug on or pull overhead - not for a good couple days, anyway. Good luck!!
The first couple days are the worst but you'll be feeling sooooo much better before you know it!! Get plenty of rest, stay up on your meds, and maybe try some ginger ale to help settle your stomach. Hope you get feeling better soon!
