i had uppers done about 6 weeks ago and im so pleased with the result. i have had a great recovery. the person who does the procedure is important but its also really important that you you do a lot of research and take a lot of care post procedure. find out what you can do for yourself and do it! heres what i did.....
for the first 48 hours i rested completely and used ice packs to keep the swelling down (dont use them continually - i would say 15 min on and then 15 min off) i used arnica cream to minimize bruising (it really works!) i also used antibiotic ointment lightly over the incision. i went back to the clinic the day after for them to check on me. they carefully and gently cleaned all the dry blood off my stitches - not that there was much as i had the procedure by laser. i continued to rest - no exercise at all and just sat around watching movies. i would say to not use a computer too much. i continued using the antibiotic ointment and arnica. after the first 48 hours i could feel the skin starting to knit together - this felt very itchy! a hot compress really helped. just soak a wash cloth in boiled water - let it cool down a little to a temp you can stand and put it over my eyes for a few minutes. this was very soothing. i did this a few times over the course of day 3. at this point i also used fresh aloe vera. if a wound dries out its much more likely to leave a scar so while the incision is healing its good to keep it moist - i used fresh aloe vera, antibiotic ointment and arnica cream on the incision as well as around my whole upper and lower eye area.
also while i still had the stitches in i used an eye bath of witch hazel a couple of times per day. this felt soothing and i think also helped keep the stitches clean without me having to wipe over them with gauze which would have put strain on the stitches. i read that the longer stitches stay in the more likely a scar will form. i went on day 4 to get stitches out - they said it was too soon. i went back on day 5 and i was ready but still had to be careful as the incision could have opened if i had pulled on the skin. i was very careful and continued to rest and use arnica and aloe vera. (once the stitches were out and the incision was closed i stopped using the antibiotic cream. because i had continued to apply arnica i had no bruising when i went to take out the stitches - the nurse was very impressed! i had almost no swelling or bruising at all.
since the stitches came out i am using paw paw cream during the day and silicone scar sheets at night. there is still a scar there but every day it is reduced from the day before. i think the silicone scar sheets are a miracle but i also think that my result is due to a combination of all the post care i did - as well as a great doctor who did a great job. with the rate of healing that im having with regard to the scar i believe that in a month i could be completely scar free.
i cant find silicone gel where i live but i think if i could get that i would use it in the day time and the silicone sheets at night. i also think that massage and the rubbing in of creams n ointments will help diminish the scarring.
i think its really important to read and research a lot before any type of procedure. educate your self and take recovery into your own hands. once you walk out of your doctors clinic its up to you to make sure you get the most of his work. dont be passive about your healing! i think the first 5 days are important. take the time to rest and look after your incision. dont be in such a rush to go back to work! take the time for yourself to get the best out of the choice you have made.
